■ Broncos: Wide receiver Brandon Marshall appears unlikely to make his preseason debut in Sunday night's exhibition against the Chicago Bears after missing practice again.
Marshall, who had offseason hip surgery, has missed most of the team's training camp with a hamstring problem. He also has requested a trade after clashing with the organization and new coach Josh McDaniels over his desire for a new contract.
McDaniels refused to specify the reasons for Marshall's absence from practice. He had returned to practice Tuesday, and McDaniels had said he participated fully in the team's drills. However, Marshall appeared to hold himself out of some pre-practice warmup drills Wednesday -- the only portion of the team's workout open to the media -- and was nowhere to be seen yesterday.
Marshall, a Pro Bowl receiver, has sought a new contract, and, after the Broncos did not act on his request, asked in June to be traded.
■ Eagles: A judge in Newport News, Va., yesterday approved Michael Vick's plan to repay creditors who are owed $20 million and emerge from bankruptcy.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank Santoro said that while Vick is "at the pinnacle of his profession," he has proven unable to manage his finances in the past and ordered him to retain a financial planner as a condition of the plan. The plan was overwhelmingly approved in a ballot of creditors.
The plan approved by Santoro hinges on Vick liquidating an estimated $9 million in assets, including houses, boats and high-end sport utility vehicles. He would not have to pay creditors during his first year with the Eagles.
Vick, 29, hustled away from the courthouse with his fiancee, Kijafa Frink, to catch a flight back to Philadelphia to make his debut with the Eagles in a preseason game.
■ 49ers: Quarterback Shaun Hill returned to practice for San Francisco yesterday and deemed himself healthy enough to play Saturday night at Dallas.
Hill left Wednesday's workout after throwing one pass because of a strained lower back, and Coach Mike Singletary said he was unsure of Hill's status for the preseason game against the Cowboys.
Hill, named the regular-season starting quarterback Monday over Alex Smith, said his that back calmed down "quite a bit" and said it was never a major concern to him.
■ Bears: Chicago coach Lovie Smith said that plans are for Devin Hester to play at returner in Sunday's Bears game at Denver for the first time this preseason. Hester hasn't even fielded many punts prior to this week's practices, and wants to do it Sunday to clear off the rust.
■ Bills: Wide receiver Terrell Owens took a step closer in recovering from a sprained toe after working out and catching passes in individuals drills during practice.
Coach Dick Jauron was encouraged by Owens' progress Thursday. He added it's possible the receiver will be cleared to start practicing fully next week. It was the third straight day Owens has worked out, and marked the most time he's practiced since jamming his foot in the Hall of Fame game on Aug. 9.
■ Cowboys: Receiver Roy Williams injured his left shoulder on a goal-line collision with cornerback Orlando Scandrick yesterday. Williams was down for longer than normal, then was examined by athletic trainers and shouted in anger as he headed into the locker room before the workout ended.
Williams might've been upset because he and Scandrick keep getting tangled up. During training camp, Scandrick, who is battling Mike Jenkins for a starting job, hit Williams hard enough to knock his helmet off (the chin strap wasn't buckled) and was covering Williams again on a play when Williams landed hard and sprained his wrist. The Cowboys are counting on Williams to replace Terrell Owens as Tony Romo's top target.
■ UFL: Simeon Rice is making a comeback with the new United Football League. The New York Sentinels announced yesterday that they had signed Rice, a 35-year-old defensive end who last played in the NFL in 2007, when he was released by the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts.
Eagles 33, Jaguars 32: Michael Vick got some cheers, created excitement and drew support from the crowd. Vick, playing his first NFL game since his release from prison, showcased his impressive skills. He played quarterback, ran the wildcat formation, even lined up at wide receiver and completed a pass right-handed.
Philadelphia beat visiting Jacksonville on David Akers' 34-yard field goal in the final minute of last night's preseason game.
Vick's return overshadowed a somewhat sloppy effort by an Eagles team that has Super Bowl aspirations.
Rams 24, Bengals 21: Kyle Boller gave visiting St. Louis one frightening moment along with a little bit of relief. Boller played better last night in his second game filling in for Marc Bulger, completing a flurry of short passes during a victory over Cincinnati Bengals.
Boller got his helmet knocked off on a hit by linebacker Keith Rivers at the end of an 8-yard scramble, waiting too long to start his slide. Unfazed, Boller got to his feet, found his helmet and completed his next two passes, including a 3-yard shovel pass to Samkon Gado.
for a touchdown.
Boller completed 14 of 20 for 96 yards, heading for the bench after the opening series of the third quarter.
