Small plates with fun twists and a strong Spanish influence, such as Serrano ham croquettes with basil, fried anchovies with piquillo peppers and shaved garlic, and a salad with Marcona almonds, goat cheese and a honey-truffle oil vinaigrette.

The usual faijitas, but also more authentic Mexican fare off the regular menu, such as chicken and enchiladas in dark, red mole; chunky guacamole "regional"; tacos filled with chopped steak, bacon and green onions. Lots of choices for vegetarians.

Come here to feast. Dosas and uttapam are regional specialties from India's southern states, thin crepes stuffed with potatoes and spices, and their thicker cousin, topped with vegetables, chilies and onions. To drink, I love the spicy, milky Indian tea.

Housed in a historic general store in East Bend, Kitchen Roselli is classic, red-sauce Italian and family-friendly. Homemade meatballs and veal parmesan are worth stopping in for, if you're in the area. Get here early -- everything seems to sell out!

There's no refreshment quite like this informal Mediterranean cafe's small, spicy red peppers stuffed with almonds and goat cheese, or its lemonade, perfumed with lemon oil and orange-blossom water. In the winter, perhaps some cheese baklava. Xia

Phone: 723-1400. $$. ABC. NS.
"Asian fusion" is what Xia is going for -- it's not quite that innovative, but still helps close a big gap in the quality of Asian restaurants in Winston-Salem. Reasonably-priced lunch specials, a respectable Asian beer list, and it's gorgeous, too.
Mellow Mushroom
314 W. Fourth St.
Phone: 245-2820. $. ABC.
The calzones are so-so, but the parmesan-dusted pies are a treat. Tons of toppings, from tempeh to feta, plus 30-plus beers on tap to wash it down.

Co-owner and pitmaster Mark Little insists that his smoked ribs, pulled pork and beef brisket aren't barbecue, but they are related to North Carolina's most famous meat. And maybe even a little better than some. Great hushpuppies, too.
