CHARLOTTE -- A North Carolina judge has ruled that a South Carolina woman under house arrest awaiting trial for a deadly wreck involving street racing in April can attend church.
A judge ruled Thursday that Carlene Atkinson, 44, cannot drive but can attend church and go to medical appointments.
Atkinson, a former Sunday School teacher and vacation Bible school director from Lake Wylie, S.C., is accused of racing Tyler Stasko, 20, at speeds up to 100 mph on a North Carolina highway.
The race resulted in three deaths when Stasko's car wrecked into another car, killing the driver, a 45-year-old college professor, her 2-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old passenger in Stasko's car.
Atkinson's car wasn't involved in the wreck, but she and Stasko are both charged with murder.
TABOR CITY -- A sheriff says that North Carolina's longest-serving legislator has shot an intruder at his Tabor City home.
Columbus County Sheriff Chris Batten said that state Sen. R.C. Soles, 74, shot one of two people who kicked in the front door yesterday.
Batten said that the intruder was taken to a hospital, though he did not know the extent of his injuries.
The SBI is investigating a claim by a man that the senator tried to fondle him more than 10 years ago. The accuser later said he made up the claim. Soles has not been charged and denies the accusation.
NAGS HEAD -- If you've ever wanted your own windmill -- especially one with a 7,300-square-foot building -- then Nags Head has the place for you.
The town of Nags Head and the Dare County Tourism board are looking for someone to take over the closed Windmill Point restaurant. The building needs as much as $300,000 in repairs. That doesn't include fixing the authentic 80-year-old windmill in the backyard.
The county and town hope someone will renovate the building on Roanoke Sound and lease it for at least five years, with an option to renew.
After that, the governmental co-owners hope that a convention center could be financed, although they estimate that's 10 years away.
The town and tourism board recently published a request for proposals. Bidding closes Sept. 30.
