Tiny -- 9-feet-wide! -- downtown Kernersville diner is a hub of nostalgia, community, tasty burgers and grilled pimento-cheese sandwiches.
Café Gelato
845 Reynolda Road.
Phone: 725-9110. $. NS.
A small but rotating selection of freshly made Italian-style ice cream. Owner Ciska Weber makes a mean yogurt-flavored gelato, and her chocolate is nothing to sneeze at, either.
Mooney's Mediterranean Cafe

Phone: 722-4222. $. BW. NS.

Finger-licking Lebanese-centric sandwiches, salads and sides. Stick to the menu's "Old Country" choices, like fried cauliflower, tawook, shawarma and moujudara (savory lentils laced with a touch of sweet cinnamon and caramelized onions).
Ombu
615 St. George Square (off of Hanes Mall Boulevard).
Phone: 293-4346. $$$. NS. ABC.

Reviewed Oct. 30, 2008.
"Wood Fired Fusion" is Ombu's tagline, but that seems to invite rambling all over the globe. And indeed, the menu is ambitious, as is everything in this stunning new restaurant.
Giacomo's
2109 New Garden Road, Greensboro.
Phone: 282-2855. $. NS.

An Italian-food lover's dream, this deli makes its own salemis, sopressata and fresh sausages, then turns them into excellent sandwiches dripping with marinated vegetables and fresh mozzarella.
Chang Thai
4146 Clemmons Road, Clemmons.
Phone: 778-0388. $$. NS. BW.
It's worth driving to Clemmons for good renditions of Thai standards, mixed with a strange dash of Japanese hibachi and teriyaki.
O'Brien's Deli
4001-C Country Club Road.
Phone: 765-9722. $. NS.
One word: Reuben! This is the real-deal New York deli, with egg creams, homemade German potato salad and Carnegie Deli cheesecake.
WS/Prime
425 N. Cherry St. (connected to the Winston-Salem Marriott)
Phone: 722-5232. $$$$. ABC. S/NS.
Steaks, spirits and creamed spinach in the downtown Marriott. And now, ribs, too. Also serves breakfast and lunch.
Ketchie Creek Bakery
844 Valley Road, Mocksville.
Phone: 336-751-9147. $. NS.
For the Martha Stewart-at-heart: At Christmas, this bakery will make you a handmade gingerbread house. Lunch, too.
Zevely House
901 W. Fourth St.
Phone: 725-6666. $$$. ABC. S/NS.
A mix of classic French and Winston-Salem. Moravian chicken pie with sage gravy is even an option at Sunday brunch. The nicest place around to eat outside if the weather is good. The specials are more delicious than some of the standbys.
