Ashe County taking steps to operate air port

JEFFERSON - JEFFERSON — Ashe County officials yesterday said they would take steps to make the county the fixed base operator at the Ashe County Airport, making the county responsible for providing or contracting for airport services such as fuel and oil.
Marvin Stump, who retired last month after 27 years at the airport, had been providing the services on a contract basis. The new airport manager, Eric Payne, was hired as a county employee.
County manager Dan McMillan explained to commissioners that the change would allow the airport to be run as a county facility. Commissioner didn't vote yesterday, but McMillan said the issue is being raised to notify the public of the county's intention.
Rich Barkes, manager of aviation system development for the N.C. Dept. of Transportation's Aviation Division, presented Stump with an award of excellence for his service.
"He's done so much for aviation in North Carolina," he said. After the county commissioners' meeting, officials and friends joined Stump at a retirement celebration at the airport.
