New Southern doesn't mean green-bean casserole. Shrimp etouffe, lamb and the Whole Kit and Caboodle -- really. It's shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams and snapper braised in broth, served with crusty bread.
Meta's Restaurant
102 W. Third St.
Phone: 750-0811. $. NS.
Southern-comfort self-serve cafeteria (but not a chain). Grab your tray, get in line and choose from beef ribs, fried chicken, baked salmon, meatloaf, mac and cheese, cobbler, and collard, turnip and mustard greens....
Salem Kitchen Cafe

The Juice Shop
308 S. Stratford Road.
Phone: 721-0444. $. NS.
Despite the name, your only choices here are super-fresh smoothies, perhaps doctored with some nutritional supplement. They're big, though, enough to make a fresh-tasting liquid meal, especially during summer swelter.
Saigon Cuisine Restaurant

Phone: 336-294-9286. $$. BW. NS.
Tapped by foodie magazine Saveur in 2000 as one of the top 100 restaurants in the United States. How can the Dinner Belle entice these restaurateurs to move just a tad west?
Century Kitchen
2133 Flint Hill Road, East Bend.
Phone: 336-699-4455. $$$$. NS.
Some delicious choices -- mole-braised pork tenderloin, scallops with seasame bok choy -- among the typical safe restauranty offerings at the resident restaurant of the Yadkin Valley's Flint Hill Vineyards. Menu is very small and changes often.
La Perlita
1001 Waughtown St.
Phone: 788-6888. $. NS.
One of the best cheap eats in town is this little restaurant off Waughtown Street. It's a combination cafe and butcher shop, and its rotisserie-chicken meals are a steal. Wrap the succulent meat in a hot corn tortilla, then shower it with zippy salsa verde.
Twenty One and Main
102 East Main St., Elkin.
Phone: 835-6246. $$$-$$$$. NS. ABC.
(out of five) Reviewed Dec. 11, 2008.
Charleston comes to the Yadkin Valley. Beginnings and endings are highlights here -- lamb carpaccio and celestial pimento cheese to start, ginger-molasses ice cream, star anise creme brulee and marshmallows that taste like root beer to end.
