On the hottest day of the year, the Frederick Keys ended up taking a Sunday stroll as they pounded the Winston-Salem Dash 9-2 at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

The temperature was 93 degrees at game time and the Dash struggled with its pitching all day and settled for a split of the four-game series.

Gregory Infante (1-2), who entered the game with an 8.00 ERA, struggled for the Dash in the third inning. Infante pitched to seven batters without giving up a hit. However, he hit Pedro Florimon with one out, and after getting Robbie Widlansky to pop out to left, Infante walked the next four batters as the Keys took a 2-0 lead. Infante was then relieved by Wander Perez.

Seth Loman, the first baseman for the Dash, said he thought that Infante struggled with his command because an injury to his hand.

"Last time I checked he had a blister on his finger,'' Loman said. "I'm not sure if it's gotten better or not, but he's a good pitcher. I played with him at low-A (Kannapolis), and he's got really good stuff. Whatever it is, he'll be fine."

Manager Joe McEwing of the Dash said he was cautious in how he described Infante.

"After he hit Florimon, it looked like he was aiming the ball and guiding it instead of throwing it. We'll see what happens," McEwing said.

McEwing stopped short of saying that Infante had an injury.

"We'll have to see. We'll have to re-evaulate and see what the problem is."

Winston-Salem threatened in the fifth off starter Kenny Moreland (3-0), but couldn't score.

With one out, Greg Paiml walked and went to second on a single by Joe Persichina, who had been sent to Kannapolis on July 25 but was recalled Aug. 6. After Tyler Kuhn struck out, both runners moved up after Justin Greene reached on an error by Brandon Waring at third. With the bases loaded, Dale Mollenhauer lined to second to end the threat.

Frederick added a run in the sixth off Perez. Wally Crancer and Billy Rowell reached on consecutive singles to start the inning, and moved up on a sacrifice by Billy Killian. Crancer then scored on a single to left by Matt Angle, but Angle was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

With the Dash trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Greene reached on an infield single and scored after Loman homered to right center to trim the lead to 3-2.

But the Keys came right back in the seventh off Nate Jones. Widlansky laced a double down the right-field line leading off and scored on Waring's two-run homer to right center for a 5-2 lead.

"He left the ball up to a very good hitter, and he took advantage of it. At that point it's 5-2 and we battled. We had some opportunities and couldn't get it across," McEwing said.

Loman said that the Dash couldn't grab control of the game after Waring's homer.

"We came back and got some momentum. We hit some balls hard right at guys tonight. It just didn't go our way," he said.

Any chance that Winston-Salem had of rallying was dashed in the ninth. Santo Luis, who came in for Jones, struggled as Frederick sent nine batters to the plate. With one out, Widlansky hit a solo homer to left to make it 6-2. With two outs, Tyler Henson reached after Kuhn misplayed a ball at second. Ryan Adams then walked, and Crancer followed with a three-run homer for a 9-2 lead.

Winston-Salem is off tonight, but it will start a seven-game, six-day road trip on Tuesday.
