New Town Bistro and Bar

420-U Jonestown Road.

Phone: 659-8062. $$. ABC. S/NS.

New Town loves to change its menu regularly, so it's hard to pinpoint dishes that are always around. I've liked tilapia dredged in crushed cashews and rum butter, spicy-sweet ribs, and flat-iron steak with Yukon Gold mashed potatoes.

La Botana

1547 Hanes Mall Blvd. (Kester Mill Village).

Phone: 768-6588. $$. ABC. S/NS.

The usual faijitas and such, but also more authentic Mexican fare off the regular menu, such as chicken and enchildas in dark red mole; chunky guacamole "regional"; tacos filled with chopped steak, bacon and sauteed green. Lots of choices for vegetarians.

Turmeric

3088 Healy Drive.

Phone: 794-8282. $$. ABC. S/NS.

Dosas and uttapam are regional specialties from India's southern states, thin crepes stuffed with potatoes and spices and their thicker cousin, topped with vegetables, chilies and onions. To drink, I love the spicy, milky Indian tea.

Cimarron

3260 S. Stratford Road, Clemmons.

Phone: 712-4689. $$-$$$. S/NS. ABC.

You might not give this stucco-building a second look, but stop in sometime. A refreshing alternative to the casual chains, Cimarron is family-friendly and comfortable, like going over to a friend's house for ribeyes. Huge portions.

Zaytoon

301 N. Elm St., Greensboro

Phone: 336-373-0211. $. NS.

There's no refreshment quite like this informal Mediterranean cafe's small, spicy red peppers stuffed with almonds and goat cheese, or its lemonade, perfumed with lemon oil and orange-blossom water. In the winter, perhaps some cheese baklava.

Downtown Thai Restaurant and Bar

219 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 777-1422. $$. ABC. NS.

Curries, fish cakes, soups and pad thai. Lunch specials.

Miss Annie's

3064 Healy Drive.

Phone: 774-0922. $$$. BW. NS.

Small and romantic, this unlikely strip-mall restaurant serves up French and Caribbean fare without the schmaltz. Jerked chicken, cod fritters, rice and beans, creme brulee.

Meta's Restaurant

102 W. Third St.

Phone: 750-0811. $. NS.

Southern-comfort self-serve cafeteria (but not a chain). Grab your tray, get in line and choose from beef ribs, fried chicken, baked salmon, meatloaf, mac and cheese, cobbler, and collard, turnip and mustard greens....

Athena Greek Tavern

680 S. Stratford Road.

Phone: 794-3069. $$. ABC. NS.

Think Greek food is all moussaka and spanakopita, souvlaki and tzatziki? Try keftedes (meatballs), skordalia (potato dip), pastitsio (macaroni and cheese), galaktoboureko (milky custard pastry) and melitzanosalata (eggplant puree). Opa!

Bonefish Grill

300 S. Stratford Road.

Phone: 724-4518. $$-$$$. ABC. S/NS.

Corporate but cozy, this chain is all about seafood, flown in fresh daily and much of it grilled over an oak fire.
