WALNUT COVE -- A-58-year-old man fell out of a boat early Monday night and drowned in a farm pond off Ralph Tuttle Road, authorities said yesterday.

The man was fishing with a relative when their boat capsized, said Greg Collins, the assistant director of the Stokes County Emergency Medical Service.

The relative then tried unsuccessfully to reach the man, whose identity had not been released by medical officials at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital yesterday.

EMS and the Stokes County Sheriff's Office started searching for the man's body Monday night.

A member of a dive team found the body yesterday. It was then taken to Jones Medical Center in King, Collins said.

An autopsy is planned, authorities said.

Inmate who climbed through ceiling to escape is caught

WENTWORTH -- An inmate who squirmed through a ceiling and came down outside the locked area of the Rockingham County Jail has been recaptured.

The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said that Maurice Alexander Williamson, 38, was recognized while at a shopping center in Greensboro yesterday.

When officers arrived, Williamson ran before being captured, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff's Maj. J.V. Thomas said that Williamson, who was arrested for resisting a public officer, will be charged with felony escape after he is returned to Rockingham County.

Authorities said that a video showed Williamson as he dropped from the ceiling to the floor outside the detention area Sunday. Williamson got clothes from a laundry room that allowed him to blend in with visitors as he escaped.

Woman in race charged with second-degree murder

CHARLOTTE -- A woman who admitted driving a car involved in a deadly street race has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said that Carlene Carol Atkinson, 44, of Lake Wylie, S.C., was charged yesterday. Police said she was being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail but didn't know whether she had an attorney.

Investigators said that Atkinson was racing Tyler Stasko, 20, along N.C. 49 on April 4 before he smashed his Mitsubishi Eclipse into a Mercedes. Its driver, Cynthia Furr, 45, and her 2-year-old daughter were killed. A 13-year-old passenger in Stasko's car also died.

Stasko also faces three counts of second-degree murder.

Records show Atkinson has had 14 speeding convictions over the past 10 years.

43-year-old man charged with sexual abuse of girl, 13

LEXINGTON -- A 43-year-old man was arrested Friday and charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl after a nearly four month investigation, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office said yesterday.

The sheriff's office received a report from the Davidson County Department of Social Services of some inappropriate conduct involving a 13-year-old girl.

After an investigation, David Keith Cochran of Lexington was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a minor. Cochran turned himself in to the sheriff's office about 1 p.m. Friday, the sheriff's office said.

He was still being held in the Davidson County Jail yesterday, with bond set at $25,000.

17 security guards charged with working with no license

GREENSBORO -- Greensboro police have charged 17 security guards at nightclubs with operating without a proper license after a sweep targeting six clubs over the weekend.

The sweep occurred after three major crimes, including a homicide, happened at clubs since Easter. Assistant Greensboro Police Chief Dwight Crotts said that the checks weren't in response to the crimes and had already been planned.

State law requires that anyone working as a security guard or bouncer be licensed or be employees of the club where they are working.

Police said that two bouncers were armed and that another was charged with possession with intent to sell marijuana.
