BOONE -- Authorities in northwestern North Carolina think that a college student may have died from drinking a large quantity of alcohol.
Boone police identified the student as Raisa Sheikh, an Appalachian State University student from Charlotte.
University spokeswoman Jane Nicholson told WXII-TV that Sheikh was a freshman majoring in art. Nicholson didn't return a phone call yesterday evening seeking additional comment.
Boone police detective David Osborne said that officers were sent to an apartment complex near Appalachian State University after a call that a person was unresponsive after drinking alcohol. Sheikh was taken to Watauga Medical Center, where she died. Osborne was not available for further comment yesterday evening.
A Walkertown man and convicted sex offender was charged yesterday with being on the premises of children as a sex offender, court records show.
Kenneth Wayne Larrimore, 39, of 5024 Old Belews Creek Road was accused of going to the Kernersville Family YMCA on Feb. 3, an arrest warrant says.
In 1993, Larrimore was sentenced to serve 16 years in prison after he pleaded guilty of two counts of second-degree rape of a child, the Winston-Salem Journal reported at the time. Court records show that Larrimore served six years in prison. He was released in May 1999.
Under state law, Larrimore is prohibited from being within 300 feet of children's sites including schools, children's museums, child-care centers, nurseries and playgrounds, the warrant says.
Larrimore was being held last night in the Forsyth County Jail with his bond posted at $10,000. He is scheduled to appear in court May 15.
WENTWORTH -- Authorities were searching yesterday for an inmate who escaped Sunday from the Rockingham County Jail by climbing through a ceiling, into a laundry room and walking out with visitors.
The man is identified as Maurice Alexander Williamson, 38, of Reidsville.
Williamson is a black man, 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds. He was last seen in Reidsville, wearing gray paints, a blue and red stripe shirt and white athletic shoes, authorities said.
He was in jail facing several charges of breaking and entering and larceny charges. He was being held on $335,000 bond.

CHARLOTTE -- Police say that one man died and another person was wounded in a basketball-court shooting that began with a confrontation over an apartment break- in.
The shooting happened Sunday during a pickup basketball game at a public-housing complex in southwest Charlotte.
Officers said that Amico Martin, 26, died at Carolinas Medical Center and that Kadarus Cunningham, 16, was in serious but stable condition.
Sgt. Todd Lontz said that the incident wasn't a random shooting, but he wouldn't talk about what led to it.
