■ Quan Warley, twice named high-school player of the year by the Associated Press while at Thomasville, had a breakthrough game for Western Carolina last Saturday.
Warley, a 5-11, 190-pound redshirt freshman, rushed for 202 yards on 29 carries in the Catamounts' 23-21 victory over Presbyterian. Warley became the first WCU player in eight seasons to run for more than 200 yards in a game.
Coach Kevin Higgins of The Citadel, whose team will play the Catamounts this Saturday, said he was very impressed with Warley.
"He's got very good vision, he's got good feet and runs extremely hard," Higgins said. "He reads his blocks well. He had really a breakout game.
"He was an unbelievable player in high school who was redshirted and now all of the sudden he's starting to feel his way and has a better idea in terms of what their expectations are within the system they're in now. This looks to me like a kid who's only going to get better and better."
Warley, who broke an ankle and was redshirted last season, rushed for more than 8,100 yards and 106 touchdowns at Thomasville, which won three straight state titles while he was there.
■ Terrell Hudgins of Elon is the Southern Conference's career leader for pass receptions (226) and touchdown catches (29).
Hudgins, a 6-3, 235-pound junior from Rocky Mount, caught 13 passes for 199 yards and one touchdown last Saturday in the Phoenix's 22-20 victory over Georgia Southern.
"Terrell's obviously got size and some very good hand-eye coordination," Coach Pete Lembo of Elon said. "I think the biggest changes that I've seen with him have been in his work habits, his work ethic, and his approach to the game on the practice field and in the weight room. I think he's becoming a more complete football player.… I feel like his stock is still rising."
■ Richie Williams, a former Appalachian State quarterback, is nearing 1,000 yards passing as a backup for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.
Williams has completed 60 of 100 passes for 984 yards and three touchdowns, with five interceptions. He has rushed for 307 yards and two touchdowns for the 2-10 Tiger-Cats.
Williams, who is ASU's all-time leader in passing yards and total offense, was recently a victim of theft at his apartment near Charlotte, where he lives in the offseason. Among items stolen were his game jerseys from the Mountaineers' 2005 national-championship season.
■ James Madison, which knocked off Appalachian State 35-32 last Saturday, took over the No. 1 spot in the FCS coaches' poll this week. Richmond vaulted to No. 1 in the FCS media poll.
Appalachian dropped to No. 3 in the media poll and to No. 4 in the coaches' poll.
Six Southern Conference teams are ranked in the polls -- Appalachian, The Citadel, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern and Wofford.
