Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center said yesterday that it has created the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery within its Division of Surgical Sciences.

The health-care system said it is the first time in 29 years that a new surgical department has been formed at Baptist.

Dr. Kimberley Hansen, a professor of surgery, has been named as the interim chairwoman of the department, which includes a new section on vascular medicine.

Hansen also serves as director of the vascular surgery and vascular medicine-training programs and the clinical vascular laboratory.

Vascular disease refers to disorders of the arteries, veins and lymphatics of the body, exclusive of the brain and the heart. It is estimated that up to 30 million Americans are at risk for vascular diseases, including stroke, atherosclerosis, and diabetes.

The department has a fully accredited vascular laboratory that performs more than 13,000 noninvasive procedures a year. It also collaborates on a vascular-biology laboratory with the Wake Forest University Institute of Medicine and the Wake Forest University Primate Center.

The new department includes fellowships in vascular surgery and vascular medicine.

Winston-Salem man faces charges in Sept. 12 incident

A Winston-Salem man was charged with common-law robbery yesterday after he was accused of stealing a car from an Elkin man Sept. 12 and trying to rob a business near University Parkway, authorities said.

Robert Paul Long, 30, of 2747 Lullington Drive, was also charged with attempted common-law robbery and unauthorized use of a vehicle, Winston-Salem police said in a statement.

An Elkin man met a man at Club Odyssey shortly before 1:50 a.m. and offered him a ride home when the second man told the Elkin man that he had a gun and ordered him out of the car, the statement said. The driver got out of the car and the second man drove away on Country Club Road.

The Elkin man's car later was used in attempted armed robbery of the Cookout drive-through restaurant on Summit Point Lane, police said. The suspect in that case matched the description of the man who stole the Elkin man's car.

The investigation led police to Long. He was being held last night in the Forsyth County Jail with his bond set at $27,000.

He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 17.

Easley adds to reward in deputy-shooting case

RALEIGH -- Gov. Mike Easley's office announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of a man accused of shooting a Caldwell County Sheriff's deputy last week.

The reward is in addition to $20,000 being offered by the FBI and the U.S. Marshal Service.

Deputy Adam William Klutz was shot in the head Friday night while responding to a 911 hang-up call at the home of Skip Brinkley. Klutz, 25, died early Saturday morning. Another deputy was saved by his bulletproof vest and suffered minor injuries.

Several agencies are working to arrest Brinkley, 32, a former police officer and Iraq War vet who was born Larry Wayne Brucke Jr. He is believed to be armed and dangerous. Easley's office said that Brinkley and his fiancee had been fighting at the home before the officers arrived.
