NORTH WILKESBORO – A North Wilkesboro town commissioner was arrested and charged with driving while impaired Saturday, according to the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office.

Robert Lewis Johnson, 65, was also cited for driving left of center. A Wilkes County sheriff's deputy said he saw Johnson's 1987 Dodge van cross the center line four times on Clingman Road in less than a mile. Then, the van went completely across the double yellow line in a curve so that the driver's side tires went into the grass on the side of the road, according to a report by Officer Steven Russell.

The deputy stopped Johnson's van at 6:07 p.m. Saturday.

Russell said he noticed a strong smell of alcohol as he approached, and his report noted that Johnson said he'd been drinking a little. Johnson's eyes were red and glassy, the report said, and Johnson was unsteady on his feet during a sobriety test.

Johnson's blood-alcohol level was measured at .09 at the intake facility. The deputy noted Johnson was calm and polite.

Johnson has been a North Wilkesboro commissioner since 2001, and he also served on the town council from 1981 to 1993. He could not immediately be reached for comment.
