Valerie Yow, the author of Betty Smith: Life of the Author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, will read from and discuss her biography at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at Elkin Public Library in Elkin.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn has captivated readers since its publication in 1943. Smith based the main character, Francie Nolan, on herself. Members of Smith's extended family were the inspiration for Francie's working-class Brooklyn clan. The author Ruth Moose has praised Yow's book, saying, "Growing up I read and reread, and loved Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I was Francie Nolan. Valerie Yow's biography is like being there all over again."
