■ Saturday night's game between top-five teams Appalachian State and James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., will feature a duel between two of the top-ranked quarterbacks in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Armanti Edwards of No. 1 Appalachian and Rodney Landers of No. 5 James Madison are dual-threat quarterbacks and will meet on the field for the second time in a 10-month span.
Edwards ran for 132 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries and completed 12 of 17 passes for 126 yards in a 28-27 victory over the Dukes last November in the first round of the FCS playoffs. Landers ran for 129 yards on 29 carries and completed 10 of 15 passes for 124 yards with one interception in that game.
Both players rushed for more than 1,200 yards and passed for more than 1,600 last season.
"He's pretty good," Edwards, a 6-0, 185-pound junior, said of Landers. "He's hard to stop. He's a dual-threat quarterback just like I am, so that gets on the defense's nerves. We'll have to watch out for the run and the pass."
Landers, a 6-1, 220-pound senior, said: "Armanti's coming in, and everybody knows about him. He's a great player, he's just a winner. I think he's proved that time and time again. He always puts his team in great position to win, and they feel they're never out of it with him behind center. Our defense will have to be up to the challenge."
■ Edwards' jersey from the Sept. 6 game against Jacksonville received the top bid and sold for $1,200 in an on-line auction conducted by Appalachian.
All 100 jerseys from the game -- modeled after those worn in Coach Jerry Moore's first season at ASU in 1989 -- were sold with minimum bids set at $150.
■ DeAndre Presley, a freshman quarterback who backs up Edwards, got plenty of playing time in Appalachian's last game. He had a team-high 13 rushes, for 18 yards, and completed 5 of 8 passes for 47 yards in a 56-7 win over Jacksonville.
Moore said that the experience was invaluable, and that Presley now has game tape to study and learn from.
"He'll get rid of the hesitancy that he has," Moore said. "I thought he threw the ball pretty well, but running the ball he was a little hesitant."
■ Moore said that his team got a lot out an open date last Saturday, including an extra week to prepare for James Madison.
"We got a lot done," Moore said. "We were able to work on fundamentals the first half of the open week and the last part we concentrated on JMU…. I really think it fell into a good place for us. We needed to get back to some ABCs of football."
