A Lexington man died Sunday night after a single-car wreck, the N.C. Highway Patrol said yesterday.

Stephen Eugene Wade, 19, of 7437 Old U.S. 52, was driving south on Old U.S. 52, about three miles south of Lexington, when his car went into a left curve, ran off the right side of the road and hit an abutment of an overpass. The car went back onto the road, then went off the right side again and caught fire, Trooper Richard Simmons of the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

Wade was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he later died.

Wade was going 75 mph at the time of the wreck, Simmons said. The speed limit is 55. The Highway Patrol is waiting for results from the medical examiner to see if alcohol was involved, Simmons said.

Man dies after wrecking motorcycle in Surry

MOUNT AIRY -- A man died yesterday after wrecking his motorcycle in Surry County, authorities said.

The man's body was found by a janitor at Mount Airy Middle School just after 7 a.m. near the intersection of Hamburg and Smith roads, said Surry EMS director John Shelton.

The name of the man, who was 22, has not been released.

Shelton said that the investigation of the wreck was in its early stages and it was too soon to know if speed or alcohol were factors. It appeared that no other vehicles were involved.

Car runs into back of school bus in Wilkes

RONDA -- No injuries were reported yesterday when a car hit a school bus that had stopped to pick up a child, according to Wilkes County school officials.

The wreck happened about 5:30 a.m. in the eastbound lane of N.C. 268 when a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser ran into the back of a bus that travels to various schools, said Steve Triplett, the director of transportation for Wilkes County Schools. He said that the bus' stop-arm was displayed and the lights were working.

A student, a monitor and a driver were aboard. Another student was walking toward the bus with his father when the wreck happened.

The front of the car ran under the back of the bus, Triplett said. The bus was able to continue its route after the wreck.

The name of the car's driver was not available from the N.C. Highway Patrol.
