□ Rep. Dale Folwell, R-Forsyth, was presented a Certificate of Appreciation during the American Red Cross Celebration of Excellence at the Koury Center in Greensboro for dedicated work passing Senate Bill 1651/Anatomical Gifts. This new law lowers the minimum age for blood donation from 17 to 16. The award was presented by Robert Fechner, the CEO of the American Red Cross -- Carolinas Region. After co-sponsoring similar legislation in the N.C. House (HB 2223), Folwell rallied support for the Senate bill among his House colleagues. Primary sponsors were Sen. Fletcher Hartsell, R-Cabarrus, and Rep. Deborah Ross, D-Wake.
Peggy Roberts of King was also honored at the celebration with the Carolinas Blood Services Region 2007 Ed Welch Award. This award is given to an individual for uncommon dedication to the American Red Cross blood program. Roberts has volunteered with the Red Cross since 2003 with fundraising, special events and the blood- services program. She spends at least 40 hours per week recruiting volunteers for the blood program. Roberts was the recipient of the 2007 Clara Barton Award, which recognizes meritorious service in volunteer leadership at the Northwest N.C. chapter of the American Red Cross. With Jessup's leadership, 80 acres has been added to the 11-acre recreational park established in 1995. The project included the restoration of 6,000 feet of eroding stream to help improve water quality in the Ararat and Yadkin rivers. When completed, the park will include ball fields, soccer fields and benches along hiking trails. Surry County and the Surry County Soil and Water Conservations District were two of the partners in this project.
The 2008 Project Award was presented to James R. Griffith Jr. and the E.C. Griffith Co. for the West Fork of Linville River project in Avery County. The torrential rains and flooding caused by Hurricanes Frances and Ivan in 2004 eroded many tributaries in Western North Carolina and destroyed substantial aquatic habitat. Trout Unlimited teamed with the Avery County Soil and Water Conservation District to approach landowners in the area, including the family farm owned by the E.C. Griffith family, to restore some of these streams.
