Once again, the Bookmarks festival offers people a chance to not only meet cookbook authors, but also sample some of their recipes.
This year's festival, which will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Historic Bethabara Park, will include authors of four cookbooks demonstrating recipes in the Food for Thought tent.
Admission is free.
The demonstrations will be as varied as wholesome food for kids and French recipes from a former Cordon Bleu student, with some down-home Lowcountry Gullah cooking and Italian dishes , too.
Here's the schedule:
❑ 10 a.m.: Tracey Seaman and Tanya W. Steel, the authors of Real Food for Healthy Kids, will demonstrate "peachy keen" chicken, "tater brocky" and mini-whoopie pies.
❑ 11:30 a.m.: Kathleen Flinn, the author of The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry, will demonstrate poulet a la moutarde (chicken in mustard sauce) and quiche aux oignons d'Or et aux tomates roties (golden onion and tomato quiche), as well as proper knife skills.
❑ 1 p.m.: Mark Strausman, a co-author of Two Meatballs in the Italian Kitchen, will demonstrate turkey meatballs in spicy tomato sauce and three-bean salad with orange and fennel.
❑ 2:30 p.m.: Sallie Ann Robinson, the author of Cooking the Gullah Way: Morning, Noon & Night, will demonstrate ham and tater salad and pecan crunch cookies, and bring along some of her pear preserves to be served on biscuits.
Food lovers also may be interested an appearance by D.G. Martin, the host of UNC-TV's North Carolina Bookwatch and the honorary chairman of the 2008 Bookmarks. Martin has just published a new edition of his Interstate Eateries, a guide published by Our State magazine that steers travelers to recommended restaurants throughout North Carolina. Martin will be at the Literati tent at 3 p.m.
