NORTH WILKESBORO – The town of North Wilkesboro lifted its mandatory restrictions on water use today. The drought had so severely affected the flow of the Reddies River, North Wilkesboro's water source, that the town had imposed mandatory water restrictions for the first time in its 117-year history.
Recent rains, especially the remnants from Tropical Storm Fay, helped restore the stream flow.
The Reddies had gotten as low as 11 cubic feet per second, or about 82 gallons a second. It was at 31 cubic feet per second, or about 231 gallons per second, today.
Town officials said they issued warnings, but didn't impose any fines during the mandatory restrictions, which started July 31. They're asking people to continue to voluntarily conserve water and caution that it could be necessary to return to mandatory restrictions in the near future depending on conditions.
