■ Eric Breitenstein, an all-state player at Watauga who rushed for 6,151 career yards in high school, made his debut for Wofford on Saturday. A 5-11, 212-pound fullback, he rushed for 57 yards on 13 carries in a 38-21 win over Presbyterian.

"It was interesting on the sideline," Coach Mike Ayers of Wofford said. "He was all wide-eyed and excited about the game. I asked him, ‘You all right?' He said, ‘Yes sir, yes sir.' He had a nice day, and he's definitely a guy who's going to get more touches and more opportunities to help us.

"He had some great runs, one especially down on the goal line when he almost scored…. He did well on special teams, did a real nice job on punt coverage, and when he ran the football he did an excellent job."

■ DeAndre Presley's debut for Appalachian State was cut short after he bruised a shoulder on his third play against LSU on Saturday. Presley was able to practice Monday with no restrictions.

Presley, a freshman and heir apparent to starting quarterback Armani Edwards, made the most of his brief debut -- running for 17 yards on his first play and completing a 32-yard pass to Devin Radford on his last play.

■ Dominique McDuffie said he made a few freshman mistakes in his debut at cornerback for Appalachian State, including one that resulted in a 15-yard, personal-foul penalty in a 41-13 loss to LSU.

"I was trying to defend one of my teammates," McDuffie said. "I got a flag for it. One of their guys hit Mark LeGree after a play, and I pushed him, and he fell. I wasn't intentionally trying to push him down, but I was trying to back him off and get him to chill out."

■ CoCo Hillary had a big performance against LSU, catching nine of the 14 passes that Appalachian completed. He wound up with 80 yards receiving.

"They like to play a lot of man and blitz a lot and leave the middle of the field open," Edwards said. "So we tried to get the ball to our slot receiver in the middle field as much as possible."

■ Andy Horn, a senior quarterback at Western Carolina, had a big game in just his second collegiate appearance. He completed 22 of 33 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-0 win over Shorter.

■ Appalachian retained the No. 1 ranking among FCS teams in the Sports Network's media poll despite its loss to LSU. The Mountaineers slipped to No. 2 behind North Dakota State in the FCS coaches' poll.

Wofford, Georgia Southern, Elon and The Citadel are also in the top 25 in both polls.
