Azinger decides on Campbell for Ryder Cup team

NEW YORK -- Chad Campbell made one last impression on Paul Azinger and was rewarded yesterday with a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. He joins Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan and J.B. Holmes as captain's picks by Azinger.

Campbell will play on his third straight Ryder Cup team but is a wild-card selection for the first time. The other three captain's picks will be making their Ryder Cup debut and will be among six rookies for an American team that has not won since 1999.

The Ryder Cup will be played Sept. 19-21 at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky.

European captain Nick Faldo picked Ian Poulter and Paul Casey on Sunday to fill out his 12-man team, overlooking Darren Clarke, who has won twice in the past four months and had played in the Ryder Cup the past five times.

The four picks fill out a team that includes Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Jim Furyk, Ben Curtis and Boo Weekley.

More golf

■ Lorena Ochoa of Mexico said that a new LPGA Tour policy requiring players to be fluent in English starting in 2009 is a "little drastic." Ochoa, the No. 1 player in women's golf, said that golfers are better judged by their performance.

She was asked at a charity event in her hometown of Guadalajara yesterday if she thought the new policy discriminated against international players. "That is a very strong word. I wouldn't want to use it," said Ochoa, who speaks English. "But I do think it is a little drastic."

There are 121 international players from 26 countries on the LPGA Tour, including 45 from South Korea.

Basketball

■ Duke will open its men's basketball season Nov. 10 against Presbyterian in the first round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke was originally scheduled to open the tournament against Delaware.

Also Nov. 10, Georgia Southern and Houston will play at 4 p.m. at Cameron, and the two first-round winners will meet at 9 p.m. Nov. 11 in the tournament's second round.

■ Keon Lawrence has transferred from Missouri to play basketball at Seton Hall. He will be eligible to practice with the Pirates this season but can't play in games until the 2009-10 season.

Lawrence played in all 32 games and averaged a team-high 29.2 minutes at Missouri last season. He led the Tigers in field goal attempts and averaged 11.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

■ The Charlotte Bobcats' chief-marketing officer has left the organization in another restructuring of the struggling franchise.

The Bobcats said yesterday that the team and Greg Economou, the executive vice president, had "mutually and amicably" agreed to part ways.

Jared Bartie, the chief administration officer, will take over Economou's marketing duties.

■ Jamaal Magloire signed with the Miami Heat yesterday, four days after agreeing to basic terms with the team.

Magloire, a nine-year veteran and former All-Star, will most likely compete with Mark Blount for a starting position when training camp opens later this month. Magloire has averaged 8.6 points and 7.2 rebounds in his career. He spent his first five seasons with the Charlotte and New Orleans Hornets and has been with five teams since the start of the 2005-06 season -- Milwaukee, Portland, New Jersey, Dallas and now Miami.

Miscellaneous

■ Tom Palombo was named the athletics director at Guilford yesterday. Palombo, also the Quakers' men's-basketball coach, took over as interim AD last September when Marion Kirby retired.

Palombo is in his sixth year at the college and has been an assistant AD since 2006. He has led the men's basketball team to a 91-47 record in five seasons and has a 191-110 record in 11 seasons as a college coach.

■ The Maple Leafs traded veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe and a fourth-round draft pick to the Florida Panthers for defenseman Mike Van Ryn, ridding Toronto of its biggest contractual obligation.

WE WERE WRONG

■ It was incorrectly reported Saturday that North Forsyth's Travis Livingston threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Hardin in a loss to Parkland. Rakis Bailey threw the touchdown pass.
