Coach Butch Davis of North Carolina said last night that he does not expect that quarterback T.J. Yates will return to full practice next week in his recovery from a broken left ankle.
North Carolina, 6-2, will not play again until Nov. 8 against Georgia Tech in Chapel Hill.
Yates was injured on Sept. 20 and his projected recovery time was a minimum of six weeks. The sixth week will end on Nov. 1.
"There's no expectation today," Davis said. "He's coming back out this week to lightly do some throwing, maybe some individual routes. Maybe at the end of the week there's been discussion but no full authority from the medical people to say that he might even participate in some seven-on-seven (with no rushing the quarterback)."
Davis is also unsure if tight end Zack Pianalto will return against Georgia Tech. Pianalto has missed the last two games after spraining an ankle on Oct. 11 against Notre Dame. Pianalto has made progress and is no longer wearing a protective boot for the sprain.
"We have some guarded optimism that we're in hopes (he will be back)," Davis said.
