CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuela plans to buy Russian-made T-72 battle tanks and armored reconnaissance vehicles as the nations increase military cooperation, a Venezuelan military commander said yesterday.
Gen. Jesus Gonzalez made the announcement after talks with the head of Russia's Federal Security Service, Nikolai Patrushev, about purchases that could include military planes, naval vessels and combat helicopters.
Russia has signed weapons contracts worth more than $4 billion with the government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez since 2005 to supply fighter jets, combat helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles. Russia is also helping Venezuela build South America's first Kalashnikov factory.
