WELL-TRAVELED RHODES:
Pianist Ken Rhodes has been a mainstay of Winston-Salem’s jazz scene for years, combining technical dexterity and inspiring improvisation with the versatility of a top-notch accompanist and strong compositional skills. Rhodes has a new CD, Peace Chant that showcases not only his considerable piano chops, but also the breadth of his musical vision, as the disc swings from Latin music to performance by jazz trios and quintets — even a bit of Big Band jazz. Join Rhodes for a CD release party as he performs from 9 p.m. to midnight at Speakeasy Jazz.
MUSIC THAT MATTERS:
Two acclaimed and talented singer-songwriters (and their bands) will perform at 9 p.m. at The Garage as part of the club’s “Catch A Rising Star” series. Amy Speace & The Tearjerkers, have drawn favorable (and justifiable) comparison to such Americana icons as Shawn Colvin and Lucinda Williams. Her blend of roughed-up country folk can be uplifting or sad — but it’s always honest. Also on the bill is the delightfully named Andy Friedman & The Other Failures. Friedman started his career as a cartoonist for New Yorker magazine, then turned to writing songs that mix barbs with wit — all set to twangy music. Two great bands for $10.
FRIDAYS WITH FRIDAY:
The 1719 Daniel Defoe classic The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe gets a TV makeover in Crusoe, a 13-part series making its debut at 8 p.m. Friday on NBC. The lavish adventure series follows Crusoe (Philip Winchester), a 17th-century mariner stranded on a tropical island. To survive, he has to rely on his wits, endurance and plenty of help from Friday (Tongayi Chirisa, pictured), a native whom he befriends.
WHAT THE HECK?
Our pick for the best name of an event this week goes to I Liked It, So I Bought It: What Is It? — Delta Arts Center’s version of Antiques Road Show. Collector and curator Regenia Perry will help you sort your treasures from your trash at 8 p.m. Saturday. She’ll also have advice for beginning or would-be art collectors. Admission is free. Evaluations are $5. The gallery is at 2611 New Walkertown Road. For more information, call 722-2625 or visit www.deltafinearts.org.>
HOFF IN THE BOX:
Yes, the new Knight Rider on NBC is just plain awful, but don’t hold that against the 1980s classic that inspired it. Well, “classic” may be an overstatement, but it was fun. Knight Rider: The Complete Series is a 24-disc boxed set with all 85 episodes of the original series featuring David Hasselhoff and his sarcastic buddy, the talking car K.I.T.T. Extras include a TV-movie sequel, interviews, featurettes, and galleries including photos, blueprints and an owner’s manual. And it all comes in a sleek black box with flashing lights and sound effects.
