Friday Night Fights return Downtown – October 17, 2008
Boxing is back on this fall. Rings of Dreams, which has held a number boxing matches over the past few years will hold their next fight on Friday, October 17th at Millennium Center, located at Fifth and over Trade Streets.
Great matches are set up, including crowd pleaser Derek “The Black Lion” Edwards (22-0) will be highlighted in a tough match against Brian “The Assassin” Norman (16-8) of Georgia. Norman’s last 2 bouts have shown his hunger to take on tough opponents, and this is assured to be a great fight.
Tickets are on sale now. However, the number is limited due to the smaller venue. General admission and ringside reserve are available. General admission is $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Reserve Ringside seats are $30 in advance, $35 at the door. Bouts and the lineup of boxers are subject to change. This event is sanctioned by the North Carolina Boxing Commission.
If you are looking for something a little different to do that weekend, this is a solid option. Good atmosphere. Diverse crowd. Live action-packed entertainment. First bout: 7:00 p.m. For more information call 201-0081 e-mail smith@nclawyer.com or visit http://www.ringofdreams.com>. Let’s get ready to rumble!

Brunch in Winston-Salem
One of the things that came out during the Smitty’s Notes “Best of Winston-Salem” contest was where to have brunch. Hasn’t been a big deal for me since I’m not moving around until mid-afternoon on the weekends (I always sleep late on Sundays). However, for some people it’s a big social time to catch up with friends or spend time with their sweetie. So, here is a sample of brunch places around own. This is not meant to be all inclusive of the city and suggest you call any restaurant first before driving out.
Mary’s Of Course (Smitty’s Notes Best of WS winner)
Sweet Potatoes (Just started a “Gospel Brunch”)
Village Tavern (Both locations)
Cat’s Corner (Fourth Street Hangout)

Forsyth County Board of Elections “One Stop Voting” starts October 20, 2008
Election Day is less than three weeks away. I usually keep politics out of Smitty’s Notes. A wise decision made early during the inception which has served it well. However, with 2008 being a Presidential election year this promises to be a big one. However, there are a number of other elections going on such as the United States Senate and House of Representatives; Governor; Lt. Governor; North Carolina Council of State and local government races. A huge turnout is expected on Election Day.
To beat the rush, the Forsyth County Board of Elections will open “One Stop Voting” locations around the county. Starting October 20 through November 1, you can vote early and get a jump on the crowds. For more details visit http://www.fcvotes.com>
I’m a firm believer that we have been given the right to vote and it is your one voice to contribute to our democracy. Not used is a waste that many have fought hard to get, maintain and preserve at home or abroad these 232 years and should not be taken for granted. The Forsyth County Board of Elections has made it a little easier so there is no excuse not vote on or before November 4, 2008. Use it!

Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts Connects Emerging Arts Leaders to Make Dynamic Difference in the Community. Thursday, October 23 rd, 2008 at The Piedmont Triad Partnership in Greensboro, NC

Winston-Salem, NC - The Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts is partnering with the Piedmont Triad Partnership and Americans for the Arts to host an Emerging Leader Creative Conversation in the Piedmont Triad on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008. Creative Conversations bring together local emerging arts leaders to discuss challenges specific to their age group and experiences and issues regarding the arts in their communities. Creative Conversations are part of National Arts and Humanities Month programs coordinated by Americans for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public. To attend, register online at http://ww2.americansforthearts.org/vango/Core/logi...
Through this Creative Conversation, the Kenan Institute for the Arts seeks involvement from Emerging Leaders in the Piedmont Triad to start a regional Emerging Leaders Network. This first gathering will focus on the role arts leaders play in creating an atmosphere where artists gain a sense of responsibility to give back to their communities and society as a whole; this includes the role arts leaders play to emphasize the need for expression, empathy and awareness that allow individual artists to dramatize issues, ways of thinking and ways of feeling about matters that affect us all
Creative Conversations are free and open to all arts professionals with an interest in emerging leader issues. Last year, more than 1,000 emerging arts leaders participated in 57 locally hosted Creative Conversations held throughout the country. An interactive map is available online at detailing where Creative Conversations are taking place throughout the country. Visit the website after October to read summary reports of the events and learn what next steps to take in your community.

PAVE RECycles: Bring Us Your Old Bikes!
Mark your calendars the third-annual PAVE ReCycles, a used bicycle collection for Bikes for the World.

This year’s collection will be bigger than ever with two collection dates and two locations. The Winston-Salem collection will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 114-J Reynolda Village.

A second collection will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Friendly Center auditorium in Greensboro. Thanks to Friendly Center for its willingness to help sponsor this event.

By adding a second collection, PAVE hopes to bring in even more used bicycles for Bikes for the World, a nonprofit group based in the Washington, D.C. area. Bikes for the World donates used bicycles to overseas charities, who then sell them at cost, often on credit, to low-income people in need of basic transportation to work, school or social services. Bikes for the World has worked with charities in Guatemala, Panama, Ghana, Sri Lanka and other countries.

Only bicycles in good condition can be accepted; those with heavily rusted frames or chains, broken frames or frames without wheels can not be used. In addition, a $10 donation is requested to offset the costs of shipping the bicycles overseas. All donations are tax deductible.

The goal is to help Bikes for the World fill up its truck, and more. Any bicycles donated over the amount it takes to fill the truck will be donated to an area bicycle collective.

Don’t have an old bike? Consider sponsoring one with a $10 donation to Bikes for the World!

Bicycles will be collected and compacted at PAVE’s offices at 114-J Reynolda Village on November 1, and at the Friendly Center auditorium on November 8.

For more information about the events, contact PAVE at 721-1021 or by e-mail at kristin@paveways.com. For more information about Bikes for the World, go to www.bikesfortheworld.org>.

P.S. PAVE ReCycles is not affiliated with the Recycle bike shop in Greensboro – although we like what they’re doing
