■ Several area runners had top-five finishes last Saturday in the Tanglewood Invitational, and some had a chance to run the course that they'll see again during the NCHSAA cross-country championships Nov. 1.
Scott Morgan of Calvary Baptist won the Boys Open race in 17 minutes, 20 seconds, Moe Schlechtweg of North Stokes finished second (17:53), and Taylor Boone of Forsyth Country Day was fifth (18:11).
Also, Hannah Parnell of Glenn finished fifth in the Girls Invitational in 20:32.
Kim Spano of North Mecklenburg, the two-time NCHSAA 4-A state champion, easily won the Girls Championship race with a time of 18:34, the day's only sub-19-minute time by a girls runner. Reidy Jones, a junior from Raleigh Broughton, won the Boys Championship race in 16:05, and Austin Jones of Reagan had an impressive showing, taking fifth in 16:21.
■ Tollie Barber, one the state's most knowledgeable and ardent high-school football fans, will be remembered Sunday during a get-together at Bridger Field House at BB&T Field from 1 to 3 p.m. Pat Barber, Tollie Barber's widow, said that friends in the football community are welcome to attend.
Barber died Sept. 29 in Winston-Salem. He was 67.
■ Linebacker DeRon Fulton of North Forsyth, who was taken off the field on a stretcher during last Friday's game against North Davidson, is going to be OK, Coach Pete Gilchrist said.
Gilchrist said that Fulton, a sophomore, took a forearm blow to the neck and that he is recovering from a stiff neck and slight concussion. Fulton will not play in Friday's game at West Forsyth.
■ The N.C. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Clinic is scheduled Jan. 9-10 at Greensboro Smith.
The clinic is designed to provide coaches with more information on training, conditioning and nutrition, and the instructors will be college coaches and club coaches from around the state.
The clinic fee is $100 by Dec. 15 or $125 after Dec. 15. Coaches interested in more information can contact DePaul Mittman at 336-255-3403 or at mittmal@gcsnc.com.
■ The NCHSAA's fall playoffs started yesterday with first-round matches in girls team tennis. State playoffs for volleyball, girls golf and cross country aren't far behind.
Individual regionals in girls tennis will be Friday and Saturday, with the top four singles players and doubles teams qualifying for state-tournament berths. The deadline for first-round volleyball matches is Saturday, golf regionals are scheduled Oct. 20, and cross-country regionals are scheduled Oct. 25.
