LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Beleaguered boat-maker Brunswick Corp. said yesterday that it is eliminating 1,400 additional jobs as the company closes four plants, including one in North Carolina, and furloughs workers at three more.
The announcement comes four months after the company said it would cut 1,000 jobs, including 300 at Hatteras Yachts' boat-building plants in New Bern and Edenton.
Brunswick said that the latest round of cuts will save $300 million by the end of 2009, and are necessary as boat sales free-fall. It said it is mothballing its North Carolina plant in Navassa in Brunswick County by the end of the year, as well as permanently closing plants in Pipestone, Minn.; Roseburg, Ore.; and Arlington, Wash.
It's also furloughing workers at three plants near Knoxville, Tenn.
