LAS VEGAS -- O.J. Simpson is being isolated from other prisoners for his own safety, and is focusing on a motion for a new trial and a strong bid for appellate reversal of his conviction for kidnapping and robbery, his attorney said yesterday.

Attorney Yale Galanter, an attorney for Simpson, said that he will continue to pursue a request for Simpson to be released on bond pending appeal.

Meanwhile, Galanter said that Simpson will be living a lonely life, advised by his attorneys to do no media interviews and allowed to see only family members and a few friends placed on a special list at the jail.

Simpson will be held in Clark County Detention Center until his Dec. 5 sentencing, then is expected to be transferred to state prison. Because of the seriousness of the charges, it is likely that Simpson will remain in jail during his appeal.

Woman, 90, who shot herself has mortgage debt forgiven

AKRON, Ohio -- Mortgage finance company Fannie Mae said it is forgiving the mortgage debt of a 90-year-old woman who shot herself in the chest as sheriff's deputies tried to evict her.

Addie Polk's plight was cited by Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, on Friday before the House voted to approve the $700 billion financial rescue package. Kucinich voted against the plan.

Fannie Mae announced later Friday that it would dismiss its foreclosure action, forgive Polk's mortgage and allow her to return to the Akron home where she has lived since 1970.

Polk remained in Akron General Medical Center and was expected to recover from chest wounds suffered last week.

Frozen chicken dinners need careful cooking, USDA says

WASHINGTON -- The government is urging consumers to thoroughly cook frozen chicken dinners after 32 people in 12 states were sickened with salmonella poisoning.

The health warning by the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited frozen dishes in which the chicken is raw, but breaded or pre-browned, giving the appearance of being cooked. They include "chicken cordon bleu," "chicken Kiev," or chicken breasts stuffed with cheese, vegetables or other items.

The USDA said that many of the people who became ill apparently did not follow the package's cooking instructions and microwaved the chicken dishes even though the instructions did not provide for it. Microwaving didn't heat the meals enough to kill the salmonella.

The department said that consumers should cook chicken products to a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cardinal lectures justices on how law serves society

WASHINGTON -- The law is a guide to an orderly society, an American cardinal said at a church service yesterday that included five Supreme Court justices ahead of the start of their new term.

At the annual Red Mass, Cardinal John Patrick Foley told an audience of government officials, ambassadors, academics and members of the capital's legal community about his decision to attend seminary rather than law school.

Four of the five Roman Catholics on the high court -- Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas -- came to worship at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. They were joined by Justice Stephen Breyer, who is Jewish.
