CHAPEL HILL - In a game between top-five ACC field-hockey teams, No. 4 North Carolina beat No. 3 Wake Forest 4-3 yesterday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The Deacons fell to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in conference games.
"Wake Forest is such a well-respected opponent for us," Coach Karen Shelton of North Carolina said. "I was proud of our performance today, especially with the ebb and flow -- we scored first, they scored, they went ahead, we came back, we get a two-goal lead, they close it to one.... We knew they wouldn't quit. They sustained pressure, they had a final thrust and we were able to hold on for the win."
The Tar Heels went ahead for good in the 48th minute on a goal from freshman forward Taryn Gjurich, who took a pass from Charlotte Verstraten in front of the goal and shot it past Crystal Duffield to put the Tar Heels up 3-2.
Verstraten, Jen Slocum and Melanie Brill also had goals for North Carolina
The Deacons closed to one behind on junior Hilary Moore's goal in the 63rd minute, but they could not get an equalizing goal to force overtime.
Raisa Schiller and Liz Fries also scored for Wake Forest.
