Clerk, robber swap shots in grocery

A store clerk and a robber shot at each other during an attempted robbery Thursday night, Winston-Salem police said yesterday.

Police said that the store clerk, Soon Kwon, was outside the Liberty Street Grocery on Old Rural Hall Road about 8:40 p.m. when a man came up and pointed a gun at him. The two went inside, and, as Kwon was walking behind the counter to get money, he pushed the store's alarm and grabbed a gun.

The robber shot at Kwon, missing him, and Kwon shot back, police said. It's not clear whether Kwon's shot hit the robber.

The robber wore dark clothing, a hood and a mask, and was about 5 feet 9 inches with a thin build, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 727-2800.

Two arrested in robberies in Stratford Road area

Winston-Salem police say that two men were arrested in connection with robberies in the Stratford Road area Thursday.

The first robbery occurred about 4 p.m. at the Family Christian Store on South Stratford Road, where a man entered and placed items on the counter. But instead of paying for the items, police said, he drew a handgun and demanded money.

About 9:30 p.m., a man entered the CVS drugstore on Cloverdale Avenue and placed an item on the counter. When the clerk opened the cash register, the man drew a handgun and demanded money, police said. The man fled the store toward Miller Street.

Police charged two men in connection with the robberies: John Henry Barksdale, 40, of 513 W. Devonshire St., and Douglas Wayne Smith, Jr., 35, who police said has no permanent address.

They were being held at the Forsyth County Jail, with bond set at $100,500 for Barksdale and $50,000 for Smith.

Kernersville man, 65, killed in tree-trimming accident

A man was killed Thursday as he was cutting a limb from an oak tree at a house in Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem police identified the man as Robert Michael Russell, 65, of 250 Gerry Drive in Kernersville.

Russell was found about noon about 35 feet up in a large oak tree behind a house on Acorn Court, off Buena Vista Road. Police said they didn't know why Russell was working at the house.

As the trimmed limb fell, it snagged Russell's safety harness, pinning him against the tree, the Winston-Salem Fire Department said,.

Deputy Fire Chief John Lucas said that the fire department is still trying to sort out how the accident happened. He said it appears that one limb may have fallen and hit another limb, and that somehow one of the falling limbs snagged the harness and pulled Russell against the tree.
