■ Devin Radford transferred from Virginia Tech to Appalachian State looking for playing time at running back.
He found it Saturday night in a 48-14 victory over Presbyterian.
Radford, a 5-9, 190-pound sophomore, had a breakthrough performance -- he had 17 carries for 179 yards and scored three touchdowns.
"This is basically what I've been waiting for," said Radford, who was bumped up to No. 2 when Robert Welton replaced the injured Devon Moore as the starter. "Coach told me to be patient, that he'd get me in there."
Radford scored his first touchdown on a 72-yard pass from Armanti Edwards in the first half and had the hot hand in the Mountaineers' second-half ground attack, gaining 51 yards on one run.
"Coach told me at halftime we were going to have to play smash-mouth football," Radford said. "The offensive line came out and blocked their tails off. I owe it to them."
■ Edwards, who sprained his left ankle against Presbyterian, did not practice Monday. He is receiving treatment for the injury and said yesterday that he hopes to play in Saturday's Southern Conference opener against The Citadel.
"It's doing pretty good," said Edwards, who stepped on a defender's foot and rolled his ankle on a third-quarter run. "Who knows, it's day to day right now, but I'm expecting to play Saturday. Every day it's getting better."
Coach Jerry Moore said that the ankle is improving, but that it's too early to determine Edwards' status for Saturday.
Quavian Lewis, a defensive end who was sidelined Saturday with a bruised knee, did practice Monday.
■ Daniel Wilcox, a former Appalachian receiver, had his first catch of the season for the Baltimore Ravens in a Monday night game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it was a notable one.
Wilcox hauled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from rookie Joe Flacco -- who started at quarterback for Delaware last season when it played Appalachian in the FCS title game. The touchdown pass was Flacco's first in the NFL, and Wilcox now has at least one touchdown catch in each of his five seasons as a tight end with the Ravens.
■ Jason Vitaris, in his first season as Appalachian's starting kicker, was impressive on kickoffs against Presbyterian. Five of his nine kickoffs resulted in touchbacks, and one he boomed through the uprights and out of the end zone. He also kicked two field goals, including a 46-yarder.
"He's turning out to be a terrific kicker," Moore said.
