■ Alan M. Ruley, an attorney and a director in the law firm of Bell Davis & Pitt P.A. based in Winston-Salem, has become a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. His practice concentrates in business litigation, unfair competition, commercial litigation, commercial transactions, intellectual-property litigation and unfair trade practices.

■ Velma G. Watts, an assistant dean emeritus for student affairs and associate professor emeritus of medical education at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been awarded the 2008 Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Student Affairs-Minority Affairs Section Special Recognition Award. The association annually recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to minorities in medicine.

■ The North American Society for the Study of Sport has given its 2008 book award to Earl Smith for his book Race, Sport and the American Dream (Carolina Academic Press, 2007). The award is given annually for the best book published in the area of sports sociology and sport studies


during the previous two years. Smith is the Rubin Professor and the director of American Ethnic Studies at Wake Forest University. He is also a professor of sociology.

■ Sam Leonard Beck, the director of student professional development at Wake Forest University's Calloway School of Business and Accountancy, has received the Roy N. Anderson Award from the N.C. Career Development Association. The award recognizes outstanding lifetime leadership and meritorious service to the career development profession. It is the highest honor given by the association.

■ The Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina has elected a new president and members of its board.

They are: President, Neil T. Annas, the president of Granite Insurance Agency Inc. in Granite Falls; President-Elect, Charlotte Hicks of OTC-Glasgow Hicks Co. in Wilmington; Vice President, Jackie Ireland Jr. of Anders, Ireland & Marshall Inc. and VFIS of North Carolina in Raleigh; Secretary/Treasurer, Timothy "Tim" B. Templeton of Senn Dunn in Greensboro; Immediate Past President, R. Cleve Folger Jr. of TriSure Corp. in Raleigh; National Director, Don Evans of Coastal Insurance in Shallotte.

Clark Gibson of Jones & Peacock Inc. in High Point, David Purinai of MSH Insurance in Rocky Mount and William "Bill" Vogedes III of Vogedes Insurance Agency in Edenton will serve their first term on the board. Dennis E. Houck of Dennis Houck LLC in West Jefferson was re-elected to a second term on the board.

■ The National Committee for Quality Assurance and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association said that Dr. Robert Dean Rosen of Winston-Salem has received recognition from the Heart/Stroke Recognition Program for providing quality care to his patients with cardiovascular disease or who have had a stroke. The program was designed to improve the quality of care that patients with cardiovascular disease or who have had a stroke receive by recognizing physicians who deliver quality cardiovascular and stroke care, and by motivating other physicians to document and improve their delivery of cardiovascular and stroke care.

■ Massage Envy's "Massage for the Cure" day held recently throughout North Carolina helped the company donate more than $50,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure's fight against breast cancer. Massage Envy, a national franchise of massage clinics, has locations throughout North Carolina, including in Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point.

■ The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, which represents many credit unions in North Carolina and South Carolina, has awarded a $7,765 Micro Community Grant to Next Step Ministries, a domestic violence shelter for women in Kernersville. Next Step Ministries will use the money to repair a roof in addition to other improvements to its operations. Next Step Ministries has also received a grant for $5,000 from The Winston-Salem Foundation. The grant will help with the salary of the shelter's executive director.

■ At the 2008 National Kidney Foundation General Assembly awards luncheon in Minneapolis last month, the foundation's North Carolina affiliate received an award for demonstrated success in health policy development and was also recognized as one of eight Superstar affiliates for fundraising achievement.

The awards were presented to the National Kidney Foundation of North Carolina's chief executive, Leanne Skipper, and its board chairwoman, Dr. Susan Massengill. Skipper was recognized for her leadership of the N.C. Institute of Medicine Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force that was convened at the request of the N.C. General Assembly in late 2006. The affiliate received the Superstar Award for raising $1 million last fiscal year.

■ The N.C. State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners said that these people have completed the Uniform CPA Examination by passing one or more exam sections from July to September: Kevin John Byrnes and Michelle Lee Cook of Boone; Harry Bassett Cardwell IV of Eden; Jennifer Ashley Barbee, Richard Philip Carothers III, Heather Caulder Cosgrove, Elizabeth Smith Demm, Jennifer Emily Dintsch, Kimberly Ann Gunn, Avery Lee Harrison, Timothy Eugene lis, Katie Lynn Jones, Lucas Moore McKeon, Aaron Lance Pearson, Lauren Rene Pope, William Waits Raulerson, Mary Jane Shafer, Clifton Wade Shepler, Michael Thomas Smith and Megan Alicia Vogt of Greensboro; Brooks Alexander Stewart of High Point; Jonathan William Cadwell of Kernersville; Jonathan Rhett Esser and Meredith Barber Tuttle of King; Edward Boysen Koch of Lewisville; Benjamin Skonder Abood, Jill Allison Boger, Monica Elisha Morgan and Sterling Carrington Wall Jr. of Lexington; and Laura Brooke Farren, Kristen Amy Maier, Kevin Robert Rose and Robert Lowell Whited of Winston-Salem.
