RALEIGH -- The Raleigh News & Observer said yesterday that it has contracted with a transport service to deliver its newspapers, a move that will eliminate 17 full-time and 58 part-time jobs when it takes effect in January.
The newspaper said that Penske Logistics will buy 47 of the 61 trucks in its transportation fleet and lease the other trucks. Publisher Orage Quarles III said in a letter to staff members that Penske Logistics is expected to hire many of the people losing their jobs. He said that workers not hired will be offered severance pay and health-care continuation.
