YADKINVILLE - The Yadkin County Board of Commissioners approved a plan yesterday to keep moving forward on a $7 million jail on Hoots Road. The board expects to advertise for bids in less than a week.
Commissioners voted 4-1 to approve the timetable. Commissioner Brady Wooten, voted against the measure.
The other four county commissioners approved the site for the 150-bed jail last fall, saying that it is more cost effective. "This is a decision we made that we will follow through with," said Kim Clark Phillips, the chairwoman of the board of commissioners.
Bids will be opened Dec. 9, and officials hope to have financing approved in January.
Robert Smith of Mosely Architects presented the timetable at yesterday's meeting. Architects estimate that moving the jail to another site would cost Yadkin County $300,000 to $400,000 in new engineering and design fees.
Some residents have been trying to block the county from building on Hoots Road. They say that having the jail about four miles from the sheriff's office and courthouse would increase transportation costs. One group has filed an appeal to the Yadkin County planning director, saying that the planning board recommended rezoning the property for a jail without considering safety and the character of the neighborhood.
