KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Ann Mitchell Bauguess, 81, of Kernersville passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Dec. 27, 1926, to John Frank and Willie Gray Jeffreys Mitchell. She was raised in Burlington and married to E. Reece Bauguess on Dec. 31, 1945. She was an active member of Pine Chapel Moravian Church where she was also a member of the Women' s Circle. She was the owner of Easy Way Driving School for 30 years. Mrs. Bauguess was also a member of the Eastern Star of Kernersville; the Forsyth County Ladies Fireman' s Auxiliary; the Sugar Sticks singers; the Sedge Garden United Methodist Church VIPs; and the Antique Auto Club. Ann and Reece traveled extensively in most states and countries. She loved to be with people and was a very giving and loving person. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reece, after 58 years of marriage; a sister, Jean Royall of Burlington; and her parents. Surviving are her five children, Reggie (Gerry) of Winston-Salem; Phil (Paula) of Kernersville; Mike (Phyllis) of Johnson City, Tenn.; Kandis (Keith) Fox of Pfafftown; and Tim (Lisa) of Gibsonville; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sylvia Belkov of Virginia Beach, Va. A funeral was conducted Friday, May 16, at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, 794 Sedge Garden Road in Kernersville, with the Rev. Tim Sapp, the Rev. Matthew Allen and the Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Burial followed in Salem Moravian Graveyard. KERNERSVILLE -- Doris Irene White Calhoun, 95, passed away Monday, May 19, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 12, 1913 in Guilford Co. to the late John Christopher and Minnie Cable White. Mrs. Calhoun was a member of Cherry St. United Methodist Church. After many years of employment she retired from Adams Millis (Hanes Brand Inc.) In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Joel E. Calhoun, Sr.; a son, Joel E. Calhoun, Jr.; and ten brothers and sisters. Surviving are two sons, Jack Calhoun, Jerry Calhoun and wife Brenda all of Kernersville; a daughter, Dura Mae Venable and husband JC of East Bend; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. A funeral was conducted Wednesday, May 21, at Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home Chapel in Kernersville with the Rev. Ron Perry officiating. Burial followed in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. WALKERTOWN -- Mrs. Elizabeth Anne White Clawson, 62, of Walkertown, died Friday, May 9, 2008, at her home. She was born May 16, 1945, in Baltimore County, Maryland to the late James Kenneth White and Bessie Elizabeth Vernon White. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Willie Dean Clawson. Surviving are her son, Paul (Teresa) Bobo, Jr. of Advance; one sister, Mrs. Betty (John) Tesh of Salisbury; two brothers, Jimmy White of Lewisville, and Charlie White of Salisbury; two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Travis Allen Gambrell, 18, of 217 Sedge Meadow Drive, Winston-Salem, departed this earthly life for eternal life Monday, May 12, 2008, to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was born July 5, 1989, to Contina Gambrell and Nathaniel Chiles. Gambrell commended his spirit into The Master' s Hands after several years of declining health. As a young child before his illness, Gambrell attended the Winston-Salem Forsyth County schools at South Fork Elementary School. After his illness, Gambrell received home schooling through private tutors. He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Contina Gambrell; and father Nathaniel Chiles; brothers Shawn, Reginald and Christian Gambrell, Anthony Porter and NaShawn Chiles; sisters Shaneca Gambrell and Ariel Chiles; maternal grandmother Roxie Gambrell Brantley; and great-grandmother Marie B. Gambrell, both of Winston-Salem; paternal grandparents Robert and Theresa M. Shelf of Kernersville; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins; and many special friends and caregivers. A homegoing celebration was conducted Saturday, May 24, at Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with Bishop John Parks officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery. KERNERSVILLE -- Curtice Winthrope Goodwin, 85, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Goodwin was born in Manchester, N.H., to the late Esor Lewis and Arline Marsh Goodwin. He was a loving father and grandfather that never met a stranger. He was a World War II veteran serving as a Navy corpsman. He retired from Jordan Graphics and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and was a volunteer at the Shepherd' s Center. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Marie Goodwin; three sisters, Jean, Madolyn and Karolyn; and a brother, Bob. Survivors include three sons, David W. Goodwin and wife Stonna of Brooksville, Fla.; Barry Goodwin of Boca Raton, Fla.; and Mark J. Goodwin and wife Fatima of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy M. Davis, and husband Herb of Randleman; four granddaughters; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted Wednesday, May 21, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kernersville, with Father Joseph E. Tustin O.S.F.S. officiating. COLFAX -- Mrs. Deborah Hartgrove Hooker, 57, of Colfax passed peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, May 11, 2008, at High Point Regional Hospital. Deborah was born Feb. 16, 1951, in High Point, a daughter of Henry and Agnes White Hartgrove. She moved from Clifton, N.J., to this area and had lived here for a number of years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jamestown and was a daycare teacher. She was employed with Perkinson' s Jewelry, Zales Jewelry, Coins and Stuff and the N.C. Driver's License Agency. On Sept. 23, 2000, she was married to David Hooker who survives of the home. Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. Agnes Hartgrove of Commerce, Ga.; daughter Marci McGuire and husband Scott of Kernersville; son Michael Piner and wife Kim of Kernersville; sisters Diane Fogleman and husband Bob of High Point, and Carmen Hampton of Commerce, Ga.; grandchildren Josh and Autumn McGuire and Ashton and Casey Piner; mother-in-law the Rev. Zelvia Hooker; and sister-in-law Pamela Hooker and her partner, Tammy Bennett. A memorial service was conducted Thursday, May 15, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point, with Pastor Joe Dzugan officiating. A special thanks to Dr. Ammar Hussieno and staff and Dr. Samuel Bickley for their kindness and professionalism. WALKERTOWN -- Jesse Avery "Doodle" Jones Jr., 46, passed away Monday, May 19, 2008. He was born June 12, 1961 in Guilford County to Edyth Chandler and Jesse Avery Jones Sr. In addition to his parents, surviving are two sons, Gray and Nicholas Jones; three sisters, Cindy Taplin and husband Ian of Clemmons; Penny Tolbert and husband Ronnie of Winston-Salem; and Pam Fulp and husband Kenneth Friend of Walkertown; five nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Ezra and Denise Allen. KERNERSVILLE -- Zora Smith McGee, 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2008, at her home on West Mountain Street in Kernersville. She was born Oct. 13, 1913, to the late Maggie and O.L. Smith. She was retired owner of Kernersville Beauty Shop. She had been a faithful member of Main Street United Methodist Church since 1953. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rober Clyde "R.C." McGee Jr., who died in 1991. She also was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Meadows; sister Mary Alice Swaim; and brothers Ora Lee Smith Jr., Edward Smith and Tom Smith. Survivors include her sons, Robert McGee of the home and R.C. "Mac" McGee and his wife, Patty, of Kernersville; son-in-law Jack Meadows of Lexington; brothers Richard Smith and Jack Smith, both of Kernersville, and Donald Smith and Edrie of Morganton; sister-in-law Huffie Smith of Kernersville; grandchildren Elizabeth Beaver and Chip, Michael Meadows and Lisa, all of Lexington, Brantley McGee and Anna of Albemarle, Deide May and Jeff of Greenville, Matthew McGee and Mandy of Huntersville, Robby McGee of Wilmington, Kristen McGee of Asheville and Bryan Lester and Stacy of Ballwin, Mo.; niece Debby Wells and J.T. of Salisbury; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her extended church family. KERNERSVILLE -- Jessie O' Neal Padgett, "Jet," 94, formerly of Waughtown Street in Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Kernersville. A native of Surry County, she was born June 27, 1913, and was the daughter of the late Betty Byrd and Woodson David O' Neal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Eugene Padgett, who passed away in 1966. Jessie, Kenneth and their son, Clyde, lived in Baltimore, Md., from 1940- to 1950. Upon returning to Winston-Salem, they owned a grocery store and produce market, and in later years she managed dry-cleaning and butcher shops. After retiring, she loved working in her yard and around her house. She also loved babysitting her great-grandchildren and "dog-sitting" her son' s two "retired" Greyhounds and watching them race around her large backyard. She lived independently in her own home until 2003, when she moved to the Salem Terrace Assisted Living facility in Winston-Salem where she lived until March of this year. After a brief hospital stay, she moved to Britthaven of Kernersville. Survivors include her son, Clyde O' Neal Padgett, and wife Marcia; three grandchildren, Terri Lynn Sethna and husband Cyrus; Steven Vincent Padgett and wife Margret; and Roman Ross Padgett and wife Karen; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters. A funeral was held Monday, May 19, at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Home Chapel. Private inurnment followed at the cemetery. KERNERSVILLE -- On Saturday, May 10, 2008, God, out of his tender mercy, called Richard Alan "Dick" Roberts Sr. home. Dick was born March 23, 1936, in Belle, W.Va. He grew up in Charleston, W.Va., and joined the Air Force in 1956. He retired in 1977 as a senior master sergeant in Minot N.D., where he met and married his wife, Vicky, on June 5, 1986. They moved to Maryland in 1996 and enjoyed being near his family. He became a beekeeper and was able to pursue his passion for fishing. The year 2006 brought him to Kernersville where he spent the rest of his days in love with life, family and his church (Sedge Garden UMC). He was preceded in death by his parents; and his two sisters, Dorcus Aretz of West Virginia and Nancy Herring of Texas. He leaves behind to cherish his memory wife Vicky; brother, James Roberts of West Virginia; children Richard A. "Rick" Roberts of South Dakota; Nancy Roberts of Maryland; Rebecca Hazen of Massachusetts; and Ronald "Joe" Roberts of North Carolina; also eight grandchildren; and much more family and many friends. A special thank you to Hospice of Winston-Salem and to a special caregiver, Amy Bofenkamp. No memorial service in North Carolina is planned.
KERNERSVILLE -- Daniel Wayne Tuttle, 25, died Thursday, May 22, 2008. A native of Forsyth County, he was the son of Kathy Davis Mabe and Gary Wayne Tuttle. He was a senior sales associate for Sprint in Greensboro. He was preceded in death by his sister, Melody O' Byrne. Survivors include his mother, Kathy Davis Mabe of Kernersville; father Gary Wayne Tuttle of Winston-Salem; nephew Justin O' Byrne of Kernersville; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and special friends Jeff and Susan Corbett.
