Addressing Fears

Lisa O'Donnell's story "Town wants say on growth" (May 8) was right on point. Our farm, Irish Oaks, is located within the 2-mile boundary outside Lewisville's town limit. We welcome the extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) and encourage other property owners outside Lewisville to contact the commissioners in support of the measure.
Some residents in the ETJ areas fear that they will have no voice with the Lewisville Town Council. I understand that concern. Despite the pleadings of Forsyth County residents, county commissioners recently ruled against the county's Legacy plan in favor of high-density development ("County OKs apartments on Robinhood," May 13).
Last year when we learned that a 212-acre tract was slated for a development with more than 300 proposed homes, we, and our neighbors, spoke out at the Lewisville planning board and town council meetings against rezoning the property. Regardless of whether we resided in Lewisville, our concerns were heard. Only after much deliberation by the council did it vote to deny the rezoning.
Town officials acted on the voices of the local population and in keeping with the Lewisville Comprehensive Plan, which calls for protecting the rural character of the community.

Importance
We would like to express our dismay over the lack of support being shown by the Forsyth County commissioners for the sheriff's deputies of Forsyth County. We believe that the work that the deputies do is of such importance that their salaries should always be at least on a par with those of law-enforcement officers in Winston-Salem and Guilford County.
In addition, if budgetary cost-cutting is necessary, we hope it will never be made at the expense of the sheriff's deputies. Surely there must be other, less essential, areas where expenses can be reduced instead.
