A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Forsyth, Davidson, Davie, Stokes, Surry, Alleghany, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties until 8 p.m.
The National Weather Service office in Raleigh said that a band of strong to severe storms is moving across the state this evening. The main threats will be damaging winds and large hail.
At least three houses and a garage were damaged by a severe thunderstorm moving through parts of eastern North Carolina.
The National Weather Service reported that the storm produced hail ranging from penny-sized to golf-ball sized in Chatham County, southern Wake County and as far east as Rocky Mount.
The state Emergency Operations Center reported damage to the houses and garage in Chatham County, as well as damage to at least one house in Ahoskie in the northeastern corner of the state.
