Wake Forest will open its 2008 football season on national television, taking on Baylor on Thursday, Aug. 28, on the Fox Sports Net network.

Kickoff will be at 8 p.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas.

The game originally was scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 30, but was moved to accommodate the national broadcast. The telecast will be available nationally on Fox Sports Net's 16 owned and operated regional networks, including FSN South.

Wake Forest finished 9-4 last season, ending the year with a 24-10 win over Connecticut in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

The Bears are coming off a 3-9 season and will be making their debut under new Coach Art Briles.

■ The Washington Redskins released Jerome Mathis yesterday and signed J.T. Mapu, an undrafted rookie defensive end.

Mathis signed with Washington early last month, making him the only player from another team to join the Redskins during an unusually quiet free-agency period before the draft. He made his practice debut during this month's minicamp.

■ Coach Joe Paterno of Penn State is back home after spending several hours at a hospital being treated for dehydration.

Spokesman Jeff Nelson of Penn State said that Paterno, 81, was released yesterday from Mount Nittany Medical Center after being taken by ambulance from his home after feeling nauseous.

Paterno underwent tests at the hospital but wasn't admitted.

Paterno has had a busy schedule lately, traveling to Philadelphia last weekend and meeting with fellow Big Ten football coaches earlier this week. Spokesman Guido D'Elia said Paterno was on the phone with recruits yesterday morning before going to the hospital.

Paterno is still scheduled to travel to Austin, Texas, to speak at a dinner tonight for Longhorns coach Mack Brown.

■ Rick Duckett, an assistant coach at South Carolina for the past six seasons, was hired yesterday as the men's head coach at Grambling State University.

Duckett had been as assistant to Dave Odom at South Carolina since 2002. Odom retired after the 2007-08 season.

Duckett compiled a 150-75 record in eight seasons as head coach at Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State. He got his start in coaching as an undergraduate at North Carolina, leading the junior-varsity program for Dean Smith.

■ Indiana University has reached a settlement with former coach Dan Dakich, paying him the $185,000 he was scheduled to make next school year.

Spokesman Larry MacIntyre confirmed the deal, saying that Dakich was owed a base salary of $110,000 with a supplemental bonus of $75,000.

Dakich replaced Kelvin Sampson after the NCAA accused Sampson of five major rules violations in February. The university gave Sampson a $750,000 buyout.

Dakich, who played for former coach Bob Knight and later was an assistant under Knight, went 3-4 in the Hoosiers' final seven games and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Arkansas.

Recruiting

■ North Davidson's Chris Pagentine has committed to play men's basketball at Division III Averett, Coach Fredrick Hurt of North said yesterday. Pagentine, a three-year varsity player for the Black Knights, averaged 15 points and made the All-Central Piedmont 4-A team last season.

Miscellaneous

■ An autopsy revealed that euthanized filly Eight Belles had no pre-existing bone abnormalities that caused her to break down after the Kentucky Derby. The tests, performed by veterinarian Lafe Nichols, confirm compound fractures of both front legs at the fetlock joints.

The autopsy didn't include results of post-race drug tests. It will be several days before those are available. Eight Belles' trainer, Larry Jones, has requested additional tests to prove that the filly wasn't on steroids.

■ The U.S. women's soccer team will play Brazil in two exhibition games in its final buildup for the Beijing Olympics, with the teams meeting July 13 in Commerce City, Colo., and July 16 in San Diego.

The U.S. is 19-2-2 all-time against Brazil, but Brazil won the last meeting 4-0 in last year's World Cup semifinals. Brazil and the U.S. also will meet in group play at the Peace Queen Cup in Suwon, South Korea, on June 17.
