ASHEVILLE
A former western North Carolina sheriff has testified in his own defense and denied that he took payments from operators of illegal gambling machines.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford was the first defense witness in his U.S. District Court trial on illegal gambling and corruption charges.
The newspaper said Medford had difficulty explaining cash deposits in his bank account during his five hours on the stand Monday. Government witnesses have testified they paid Medford thousands of dollars so they could run video gambling machines.
