APEX - A U.S. Postal Service worker could face criminal charges after more than 100,000 pieces of undelivered mail were found in the employee's home in Apex.
Dan Mihalko with the service's Office of the Inspector General said that evidence has been given to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Raleigh. Mihalko said that some of the mail was five or six years old.
Mihalko said that federal prosecutors plan to file charges, though a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office didn't immediately return a message this morning.
Authorities searched the home last week after a meter reader discovered some mail on the back deck of the home. The employee recently resigned.
Most of the mail appeared to be fliers and coupons, though agents are searching for first-class mail that may need to be delivered immediately.

Imagine the headaches this person had caused with undelivered bills and legal papers, etc. We can do without the junk mails, but it would seem that the postmaster would have noticed something based on at least a few complaints of missing bills from that route. Maybe, the lazy mailman simply eliminated the junk mail. Regardless, he is in deep trouble now.

If this postman was getting rid of junk mail, credit card offerings from Wilmington Delaware, and those value pack coupon envelopes, then all I can say is that its a shame he wasn't working my route.

I immediately recycle 95% of my mail upon opening my mail box because it is just junk. Anyone know a way of stopping this?

The postal service is comparable to a guy on a street corner handing out flyers in the sense that they are basically handing me useless junk and saying "here, you throw this away".
