CHAPEL HILL
The slain student body president of Chapel Hill received a degree with a double major during a graduation ceremony that was cut short by bad weather.
Eve Carson earned a degree with highest distinction in biology and political science. The 22-year-old Carson of Athens, Ga., was found shot to death March 5 in a street near campus in Chapel Hill and two men are charged with first-degree murder.
About 15,000 people attended UNC's ceremony in Kenan Stadium, but the normally two-hour event was cut to about a half hour because of rain. Chancellor James Moeser canceled most scheduled speakers and conferred degrees.
Some 4,000 graduates at Duke sat through a chilly, damp and longer ceremony in Wallace Wade Stadium. Writer Barbara Kingsolver was the speaker and urged graduates to embrace a sustainable, community-oriented lifestyle.
