N.C. land trust acquires King Mountain for park

King Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the Uwharrie Mountain range, has been acquired by the Land Trust for Central North Carolina.

The 340-acre tract is in southern Randolph County and will become part of the Uwharrie National Forest, which is in Randolph, Davidson and Montgomery counties. The forest is one of the smallest national forests in the country with about 50,000 acres.

Officials with the trust said that the mountain serves as the headwaters for several streams and is home to a rare species of mussel.

The property may eventually be a link in a 20-mile expansion of the Uwharrie National Forest's trail system.

The trust is a nonprofit corporation that works to conserve land and water resources in the lower Yadkin/Pee Dee River watershed.

Greensboro officers may face disciplinary action

GREENSBORO -- A police official says that three Greensboro officers could be held accountable even though a prosecutor decided not to prosecute them in a sexual-assault case.

The Greensboro News & Record reported yesterday that Assistant Chief Ron Rogers said the officers could face administrative punishment and that the department is still investigating.

A female police officer reported in December that she was sexually assaulted after she got into a vehicle with three officers, who have been on paid suspension.
