Goodwill wants to build center

Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina plans to build a $5 million, 46,000 square-foot training center, retail outlet and clearance center on Peters Creek Parkway near Parklawn Cemetery and Parkland High School.
The center would help Goodwill expand its operations into an area of the county that has had a lot of growth in recent years, said Bill Haymore, the vice president of facilities services for Goodwill.
"We're not serving the needs of people on the south side of Winston-Salem adequately," he said. "We have several locations throughout the county, but we felt like this was an area we should be doing work in."
The planning board approved the request at its Thursday meeting. The Winston-Salem City Council is likely to vote on the proposal in June.
Goodwill plans to break ground for the project by the end of summer, Haymore said, and the center would open in late spring 2009.
The new Goodwill center will be the first in Winston-Salem to offer a clearance center in addition to a regular retail store, said Art Gibel, the chief executive officer of Goodwill.
The clearance center will offer further markdowns on items that have not sold in the retail stores. Goodwill tested the model in Asheville, Gibel said.
All of Goodwill's other stores will remain open. Goodwill is likely to move some job-training programs to the site, Gibel said, but Goodwill is still working out what those will be.
The new center will create about 25 new jobs, Gibel said.
"It's a key area for us to move into," he said. "That is probably one of the fastest areas in Forsyth County."
