IN THE ARTS

□ The first Brain Art Contest for ages kindergarten-grade 2 and grades 3-5 was held recently as a part of Brain Awareness Season 2008 in Winston-Salem. More than 125 entries were received from several area schools. The theme for grades kindergarten-2 was: "My Brain Helps Me ________." The winners were: First place: Ta'Mauri Miller of Gibson Elementary School; second place: Zach Baugher of Middle Fork Elementary; third place: Simon DeOleo of Speas Elementary; honorable mention: Danytza Cisneros of Speas Elementary, Daniela Hernandez of Speas Elementary and Angeles Ortega of South Fork Elementary.

The theme for grades 3-5 was: "Brain Fitness: I Keep My Brain Happy By ________." The winners were: First place: Kaylynn Wilson of Vienna Elementary; second place: Tori Atkins and Abby Edwards (collaborators) of Vienna Elementary; third place: Zack Ortiz of Union Cross Elementary; honorable mention: Tori Atkins and Abby Edwards (collaborators; submitted two entries to the contest); Brianna Pilcher of Vienna Elementary and Bryanna Reese of Union Cross Elementary.

□ Six Upper School students from Forsyth Country Day School participated in the N.C. Music Educators Association Central District Solo and Ensemble Festival April 18. The students were: Julia Hudgins, William Overton, Katie Pollock, Chelsey Willetts and trio: Katie Contento, Katie Pollock and Chelsea Thomason.

IN EDUCATION

□ Robert Brice Russ has been named the recipient of the Willie P. Mangum Medal in Oratory for the year 2008 at UNC Chapel Hill. This award, the oldest student award, established in 1877, is awarded to the member of the senior class who, in the opinion of a group of judges, gives the best oration at an annual contest. The award is administered by the Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies. Russ graduated with honors May 11. He is the son of Dennis and Tami Russ of Kernersville.

□ Christine Davis, the daughter of John and Donna Davis of Pfafftown, graduated May 10 from the School of Pharmacy at UNC Chapel Hill with a doctor of pharmacy degree. She has accepted a position with Cardinal Health and will be working as a nuclear pharmacist. Davis graduated magna cum laude from N.C. State University in 2004 with a bachelor's of science degree in animal science. She graduated from Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in 2000 as a class salutatorian.

□ Kelli Mack has received a North Carolina Nurse Scholars Award. Mack, a 2006 graduate of Reynolds High School, is a rising junior at UNC Greensboro and has been accepted into UNCG's nursing program. The award pays for tuition and the student promises to work as a registered nurse in North Carolina for a minimum of two years. Mack has been on the dean's and chancellor's list at UNCG for four semesters. She is the daughter of Steven and Carolyn Mack of Winston-Salem and the granddaughter of Dolores Mack, also of Winston-Salem.

□ William Cole Andrew Jr., the son of Bill and Tammy Andrew of Winston-Salem, has been inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at N.C. State University. He is a junior majoring in biological sciences and plans to attend medical school.

□ Nancy Abel, an adapted physical-education teacher of exceptional children in Guilford County, was named NewBridge Bank's "Outstanding Teacher of the Month" in April. She also received a $1,000 cash award. Abel travels to 15 schools each week in the High Point area, working with special-needs children in grades kindergarten through 12.

□ Lindsay Peele of Pilot Mountain, the daughter of Charlie and Lisa Peele, was recently named the 2009 Yadkin Valley Junior Miss Scholarship Program overall winner. Lindsay is a junior at East Surry High School. Participants in the scholarship program compete in five categories: interview, fitness, talent, self-expression and scholastics. Lindsay won preliminary awards in four of the categories. For the talent portion of the competition she performed a dance routine to "A New Life" from the Broadway hit Jekyll & Hyde. As the local winner, Lindsay won $700 in scholarships and will compete in the state program Feb. 20 and 21 in Greensboro for a chance at more than $25,000 in scholarships. The state winner will compete for the national title next June in Mobile, Ala.

□ Demond Antoine Hairston of Winston-Salem was named a Student Leader of the Year by the Student Life Department April 8 at Averett University, Danville, Va. He is a senior studying psychology, with a concentration in counseling and clinical psychology.

□ Sarah Cook of Kernersville was named to the dean's honor list at Agnes Scott College, Atlanta. She is a graduate of East Forsyth High School and is the daughter of Thomas Cook and Elizabeth Cook, both of Kernersville.

□ The following students were named to the third-quarter honor roll at The Downtown Middle School:

Fifth grade: Jada Baker, Kelaiah Boothe, Tamir Glenn, Charlie Goldsmith, Malaycia Goldsmith and Aryanna Walker.

□ Four students from Forsyth Technical Community College placed third in the seventh annual N.C. Sustainable Building Design competition in Raleigh. The Forsyth Tech team, Jason Bowen, Stephanie Kuntz, Rachael Marsh and Matthew Troutman, competed against students from universities and community colleges across the state, including Duke University, N.C. State University, Appalachian State University and East Carolina University. Their received a $500 cash prize.

□ The fifth-grade class at Reed Elementary School in Lexington has won Animal Planet's special Nim's Island: Our World – A Reel Thinking Event. The class project was titled "Going Native." They bought native plants to enhance the school grounds and attract native wildlife. The project was chosen by a team of environmental experts including representatives from National Wildlife Federation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Marine Sanctuary Program, Razoo and Walden Media.

□ Crisis Control Ministry had its annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon recently. The luncheon was sponsored by Southern Community Bank. The honorees were:

Ron Rice Business Award: WBFJ Christian radio.

Congregational Award: Glory of God Holiness Church of Deliverance.

Volunteers: Paula Parks (35 years); Pam Kahl and Graham Rights (32 years); Nell Cavanaugh and Myrtle Shermer (30 years); Betty Ann Austin (28 years); Wendy Glen (27 years) and Carol Hunter, Helen Idol and Owen Newell Jr. (25 years). Ruth Bailey was honored for providing more than 600 hours of service.

□ Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center recently honored Winston-Salem Police Chief Pat Norris with a Living Legend Award as part of the Calvary Baptist Church/Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center Spring Break Basketball and Cheerleading Camp. Art Blevins, the director of the center, presented the award.

□ The first "Green Build" Habitat Home in Forsyth County was dedicated April 20 in Winston-Salem. More than 400 volunteers, numerous area businesses, local churches, friends, family, and the new owners participated in the construction of the home and in the dedication ceremonies. Mayor Allen Joines was among those taking part in the dedication ceremony, and the Grace Angels Dance Troupe performed.

□ Outstanding Women in Leadership in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County were recognized April 24 at the Historic Brookstown Inn Ballroom. Honorees included: Sylvia P. Adams, the executive director of the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Winston-Salem; Simona Atkins Allen, a retired music teacher in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools; Florence Corpening, the chief executive officer of the YWCA of Winston-Salem; Beverly Diane Graham, the owner of Medicap Pharmacy; the Rev. Yvonne H. Hines of the Mount Sinai Full Gospel Deliverance Center; Susan M. Ivey, the chairman, president and CEO of Reynolds American Inc.; Sandra Miller Jones, the founder and chairman of Segmented Marketing Services Inc.; Pat Norris, the chief of Winston-Salem Police Department; and Janie Wilson, the owner of Excalibur Direct Mail/Marketing Services.

The program was established in 2003 and is sponsored by Vivian H. Burke, a member of the Winston-Salem City Council; the City of Winston-Salem, Southern Community Bank and Trust, and Visit Winston-Salem.

IN THE MILITARY

□ Air Force Airman Joshua T. Whisenhunt, Air Force Airman Efgenia C. Dimov and Air Force Airman James M. Lewis have graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Whisenhunt, a 2003 graduate of Salem Baptist Christian School, is the son of Mark and Jannette Whisenhunt of Winston-Salem.

Dimov, a 2004 graduate of Reynolds High School, is the daughter of Dalida Uzcategui of Winston-Salem.

Lewis, a 2006 graduate of Calvary Baptist Day School, is the son of Michael Lewis and Melanie Nachlas, both of Winston-Salem.

□ Army Pvt. Daniel A. Flores has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He graduated in 2005 from West Forsyth High School and is the son of Janet Flores of Clemmons.

□ Capt. Sean T. Smith has been named the 2007 Michael J. Novosel Army Aviator of the Year by the Army Aviation Association of America. He was presented the award by Gen. George W. Casey Jr., who is the chief of staff of the U.S. Army, not the secretary of the Army as was stated last week. Smith received the award at the association's annual meeting April 7 at National Harbor, Md. He recently returned from a 15-month deployment to Iraq. He is an Apache pilot with the 1st Attack Reconnaissance Batallion of the 82nd Airborne Division. Smith graduated from Reynolds High School in 2000 and from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 2004. He is the son of Tom and Beth Smith of Winston-Salem.

IN SCOUTING

□ Mary Cofer, a member of Girl Scout Troop 567, has received the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. For her project, she helped organize and lead a mission trip to Bay St. Louis, Miss., last summer to help Hurricane Katrina victims clean up and repair their homes. She coordinated the trip with Mission on the Bay, an Episcopal relief and development group in the area. Her youth group from St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, led by David Rose, accompanied her on the trip. Mary prepared the group by holding a tool-safety class at Home Depot and leading the group in assembling personal first-aid kits. She also collected supplies, including items from Chermak and Hanson Orthodontics and Forsyth Medical Center to take to the area. Mary has been a Girl Scout for 13 years and is a senior at Reagan High School. She is the daughter of Joel and Debbie Cofer of Pfafftown.

□ Braxton Reynolds, a member of Boy Scout Troop 349 in Wake Forest, has received his Eagle Scout Award. For his project, he designed, built and installed three 10-foot picnic tables at Harris Creek Elementary School in Raleigh. He is a fourth generation Eagle Scout; his great-grandfather, the late Wallace Reynolds of Winston-Salem, received his Eagle Scout Award more than 80 years ago, his grandfather, Calvin Reynolds of Winston-Salem, received his in 1952; and his father, Albert Reynolds, received his in 1972 in Winston Salem. Braxton is a senior at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School and plans to attend Wake Technical Community College. He is the son of Albert Reynolds and the late Gayle Casey Reynolds of Wake Forest and the grandson of Calvin and Nancy Reynolds of Winston-Salem.

IN OTHER AREAS

□ Randy and Tara Laws of North Wilkesboro recently won the Food Lion AutoFair Best of Show award at Lowe's Motor Speedway with their 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air.
