A Hickory man is accused of killing a West Virginia man and shooting his wife, who was in critical condition yesterday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Barney Adrian Dunlap, 45, of Hickory was charged in the death of Gerald Keith Lakey of Bremerton, W.Va., and the attempted murder of his wife, Roslyn Fox Dunlap.
At 2:38 a.m. Friday, Barney Dunlap saw police Officer Gary Dishman in a parking lot on Harper Avenue, police said. He told the officer that he had killed his wife and her boyfriend, police said.
Dishman took him into custody and dispatched officers to 828 Queens St., where they found both victims.
Roslyn Fox Dunlap was first taken to Caldwell Memorial Hospital; she was later taken to the medical center. Lakey was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said that the Dunlaps had recently separated. The preliminary investigation found that the suspect shot both victims with a 12-gauge shotgun, police said.
"I'm praying, just hoping for the best to come out of this," said neighbor Bridget Patterson.
Lenoir Police and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating.
Anyone with information is asked to call Lenoir Police at 757-2100 or Lenoir/Caldwell County Crimestoppers at 758-8300.
