FORT BRAGG - FORT BRAGG - The Army is starting a program to give some single soldiers a chance to live in apartments inside the gates of Fort Bragg rather than renting off the post.

Army Secretary Pete Geren toured a model apartment Wednesday. The secretary and Congress approved the project to build 312 apartments, which are being built by a private company.

Single officers and noncommissioned officers from staff sergeant and up will be eligible to lease the apartments from Picerne Military Housing. Rent will be paid from the soldiers' monthly housing allowance, which varies according to rank, said Maj. Angela Funaro, a base spokeswoman

Lower-ranking single soldiers, from sergeant down, will continue to live in barracks, Funaro said.

Recently, attention has been focused on barracks occupied by a company of 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers, where a sewage backup, peeling paint and mold were shown in a video made by a soldier's father.

Division officials acknowledged that some of their barracks are old and have maintenance problems. New barracks are being built for the 82nd Airborne and other units.

The new apartment complex is named Randolph Pointe and features furnished one- and two-bedroom apartments with private bathrooms. It is within walking distance of a post exchange store.

Picerne runs much of the family housing on Fort Bragg and neighboring Pope Air Force Base.
