Republicans who won the primary were Chuck Billings and William Caudill with 484 and 377 votes. They beat Don Early, who received 234 votes.
JEFFERSON -- Voters picked three Democratic candidates to appear on the November ballot for the board of county commissioners. They are two-year incumbent Commissioner Marty Gambill, who received 3,071 votes; Dale Baldwin, a former mayor of West Jefferson, 2,354 votes; and Dallas Shatley, 2,184 votes.
Jerry McMillan, a West Jefferson alderman, was still listed on the primary ballot but had announced that he was dropping out of the commissioners' race so he could remain on the town board. He finished with 1,986 votes.
In the Republican primary for the board of county commissioners, the top three finishers, who will advance to the general election, were former Commissioner Gerald Price, with 1,443 votes; incumbent Larry Rhodes, 1,380 votes; and incumbent Commissioner Judy Porter Poe, with 1,339 votes.
Not advancing were Gary Roark, 1,193 votes; Jennifer Carter-Freeman, 859 votes; and former Commissioner George Yates, 830 votes.
MOCKSVILLE -- Two newcomers and one incumbent swept the Republican primary for the board of county commissioners, according to complete but unofficial numbers.
Mark Jones led with 2,851 votes, or 17.2 percent. Incumbent Commissioner Richard B. Poindexter got 2,045 votes, or 12.3 percent; and Ken White received 1,948 votes, or 11.7 percent.
Robert Wisecarver trailed with 11.3 percent of the vote, followed by incumbent Commissioner Johnny Frye, with 11.1 percent; Chad Bomar, with 9.42 percent; Michael D. Allen, with 8.87 percent; Glenn Mace, with 8.82 percent; Jesse "Pete" Gentry, with 5.8 percent; and Charles Odell Williams with 3.45 percent.
Jones, Poindexter and White will face Democrat Jeff Adamonis in the November general election.
Also, Barbara Owens and Chad E. Fuller won two seats on the Davie County Board of Education. Owens got 4,369 votes, or 23.8 percent. Fuller got 3,547 votes, or 19.33 percent.
Also running were Brent Ward, with 16.97 percent; William O. Whaley, 14.84 percent; Shannon W. Grimes, 10.83 percent; Cynthia Sutton Durham, 9.95 percent; and Edwin Owens, 3.93 percent.
The race was nonpartisan, and the new school-board members will be sworn in this July.
□ LEXINGTON -- Two incumbent commissioners easily won last night's Republican primary, but a relative newcomer in Davidson County politics ended up with the most votes for three seats on board of county commissioners.
Cathy Dunn, who helped organize an unsuccessful effort to incorporate Southmont, won 5,475 votes, or 20.2 percent, according to complete but unofficial results. Close behind was incumbent Commissioner Fred D. McClure, with 5,402 votes, or 19.9 percent. Commissioner Larry W. Potts, the current chairman of the board, received 5,189 votes, or 19.1 percent.
The other candidates who ran were Kenny Moore, with 15.2 percent; incumbent Commissioner Larry Allen, with 13.9 percent; and Eddie Gallimore, with 11.6 percent.
Dunn, McClure and Potts will face Democrat Rosa Terry in the November general election.
□ DENTON -- Efforts to legalize alcohol sales in Denton were solidly defeated last night, according to complete but unofficial results. The sale of malt beverages, unfortified wine, mixed beverages and an ABC store were all defeated.
DANBURY -- Two Republican incumbent candidates for the board of county commissioners won in the primary election. According to complete but unofficial results, Commissioners Leon Inman and Jimmy Walker got 2,424 votes and 1,995 votes, respectively. Republican Ronda Jones trailed with 1,460 votes.
□ MOUNT AIRY -- In the Republican primary for the Mount Airy district seat on the board of county commissioners, incumbent Jimmy Miller won with 1,886 votes. Jerry Fore trailed with 1,649.
Miller is running for a sixth, four-year term.
No Democrats filed for the seat.
□ DOBSON -- Dobson voters rejected a proposal to allow the sale of mixed drinks, with 190 votes against and 168 for. Dobson already has a liquor store.
□ PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Voters approved a proposal to allow the sale of mixed drinks, with 241 votes in favor and 192 votes against. Voters also approved the town's first liquor store. There were 234 votes for it and 202 votes against it.
BOONE -- Boone dentist Jerry Butler won the Republican primary for the N.C. Senate's 45th District seat, beating Taylorsville businessman Dwight Shook. Butler got 7,629 votes to Shook's 6,551. Butler will face incumbent Democrat Steve Goss in November.
The district covers Alexander, Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes counties.
Voters also chose a Democrat for the District 1 seat on the board of county commissioners. Tim Futrelle won with 4,215 votes, while Doug McGuinn had 1,930. Futrelle will advance to the November ballot and faces no opposition from Republicans, who didn't field a candidate for the seat. The seat is currently held by Democrat Mary Moretz, who did not run for re-election.
WILKESBORO -- Former Wilkes County Clerk of Court Shirley Blackburn Randleman won yesterday's Republican primary for the N.C. House 94th District seat. She received 3,817 votes. Former County Commissioner Roger Dale Smithey got 2,516 votes; and John Reavill, 1,106. Randleman will face Democrat Larry Pendry in November. The seat is currently held by Rep. Tracy Walker, who is retiring.
The district covers Wilkes County.
Voters also selected three Republican candidates to appear on the November ballot for the board of county commissioners. The unofficial vote total was former Wilkesboro Town Commissioner Gary Blevins, 4,859; incumbent Keith Elmore, 4,768; and incumbent Chairman Charlie Sink, 4,272. Incumbent Fay Byrd trailed with 4,082 votes. The Democrats did not have a primary. On the ballot in November will be Democrats Joe Anthony, Michael Holleman and Matt Ledford.
Voters also elected three people to the Wilkes County Board of Education.
Winning seats were incumbent Coleen Bush, 6,910 votes; former principal Peggy Martin, 6,323; and Rickey Lankford, 5,522.
Failing to win a seat were Eddie Settle, 4,851; Brenda Dobbins Barber, 4,655; Doug Rollins, 4,390; incumbent Judith Walsh, 4,216; and David Walsh, 1,601.
YADKINVILLE --Darrell McCormick won the Republican primary for the 92nd House District, a seat held by longtime Republican incumbent Rep. George Holmes, who is retiring for health reasons.
McCormick received 4,684 votes. Dempsey Brewer trailed with 1,938.
The district includes Yadkin and parts of Surry and Iredell counties. McCormick will face-off in November against Ric Marshall, the only Democrat running for the seat.
In the race for three seats on the Yadkin County Board of Commissioners, Kevin Austin, incumbent Brady Wooten, and David Moxley won the Republican primary with 3,049, 2,852, and 2,183 votes, respectively.
Trailing were Allen Sneed, with 1,691; incumbent Kim Clark Phillips, 1,461; incumbent Joel Cornelius, 1,357; John Patrick Clifton, 1,188; Don Johnson, 704; and Dean Coe, 881.
Austin, Wooten and Moxley will face-off in November against Kevin Thomas, the only Democrat running.
In the race for four seats on the Yadkin County Board of Education, Joe Dezern, incumbent Rex "Buck" Baity, Larry Worth Vestal and incumbent Hazel Nixon Brown won four-year terms with 5,619, 4,812, 4,733, and 4,407 votes respectively. Trailing was Brock Matthews with 4,658. The race was nonpartisan.
