Wide receiver Kevin Marion of Wake Forest has signed a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers and will be in minicamp with the team this weekend.
"They start camp (on Saturday) so they wanted me there a day ahead of time," said Marion, who was traveling to Pittsburgh this afternoon. "I'm excited to get this chance because I just want to show the coaching staff what I can do."
Marion, a 5-10, 198-pounder from St. Petersburg, Fla., also was the Deacons top kick-returner last season and was second on the team in all-purpose yards. He that the Steelers have said that they are hoping he can return punts and kickoffs, and Marion said he also hopes he gets a shot at wide receiver.
"They've mentioned to me about being a return guy," he said. "But really I just want to go in there and do whatever I need to do to make the team."
Marion had 876 kickoff return yards last season. He also had 192 receiving yards on 18 catches and 78 yards on 21 carries, mostly on reverses.
Marion was one of the fastest players in the ACC during his career and said that speed is his best asset. He has run the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds.
"Speed is what I bring out there, and I realize that," he said.
