❑ John S. Clark Company LLC is donating $25,000 in scholarships to students at five community colleges in areas where the company has operations. The scholarships will also serve to commemorate John S. Clark's 50th anniversary this year. The company awarded the first scholarship of $5,000 Feb. 26 to officials at Surry Community College and Surry Community College Foundation, which will benefit 10 students. The company will also present $5,000 scholarships to benefit 10 students at Forsyth Technical Community College, Guilford Technical Community College, Brunswick Community College and Cape Fear Community College.

❑ Katie Stevens of Clemmons has been awarded the Mary Morris Character Award, one of the top academic honors for the 2007-08 school year, at Lipscomb University. Stevens, a graduate of West Forsyth High School, will be presented the award in a ceremony in April. Stevens, an elementary education and Spanish major, graduated cum laude in December with a bachelor of arts degree.

❑ The PTA of Lewisville Elementary School has selected seven grants to be funded through its Grant-A-Teacher-A-Wish Program, which was introduced this year as a way of training teachers how to write grants while enhancing the learning experience for students. The program was funded through the Cool Cat Walk, the annual PTA fundraiser. Students solicited sponsors for the walk and raised more than $24,000. The PTA was able to allot $10,000 for the Grant-A-Teacher-A-Wish program. The 2007-08 grants are: Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals test and kit for the speech and language department; one document camera and one mobile ActivBoard with projector available to all grades in the school's media center; AR incentive program for fourth grade; 30 pedometers for the physical-education department; butterfly garden and greenhouse available for the entire school; five indoor terrariums for all second-grade classrooms, journals for all second-graders for the 2008-09 year and materials to upgrade the Spanish department.

❑ Master Sgt. Antonio R. Romano II was recently presented the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Iraq at Camp Lejeune. He is the senior enlisted adviser to the commanding officer, Office of Military Support, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Washington Navy Yard, Washington. His other awards include three Navy Commendation Medals, two Joint Services Achievement Medals, two Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals, two Army Achievement Medals and an Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Antonio R. Romano of Bridgeport, W.Va., and is married to Shanna Marie Romano, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Eugene Brewer of Winston-Salem.

❑ Army National Guard Pfc. Daryl E. Hamilton has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. Hamilton, a 1990 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School, Charlotte, is the grandson of Nancy L. Jacobs of Winston-Salem.
❑ The 31st annual Christopher Giles and Lucille S. Harris Competitions in Musical Performance took place Feb. 23 at Wake Forest University. Twenty-seven students from the university participated in the competition and the following area students were winners: Senior soprano Nicole Murray of Greensboro won first place, the $500 Joseph Pleasant and Marguerite Nutt Sloan Award. Sophomore violinist Elizabeth Martin of Winston-Salem won second place, the $400 Patricia Sloan Mize Award. Junior soprano Virginia Browne of Winston-Salem won fourth place, a $200 award.
The theme for the open competition was "Music of the Americas." The competition, which was established by Paul and Sara Sinal, honors Christopher Giles, who taught piano at Wake Forest for 37 years before his death in 1996. The contest also honors retired Wake Forest piano instructor Lucille S. Harris.
❑ Darion Jeralds was recently honored with the Outstanding Student-Athlete Award at the 22nd annual Academic Awards Program for Minority Students at UNC Wilmington, where he is a sophomore. He is a member of the UNC Wilmington basketball team. He was also named to the dean's list for the fall semester. Jeralds is a 2006 graduate of West Forsyth High School.
❑ Jonathon Blalock placed second in both the Boys 55- and 200-meter dash competition for 10-year-olds at the Midwest Youth AAU Championship Indoor Track and Field competition, which was held last month at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. Jonathon is a member of the youth track team at the Platinum Sports Academy in Greensboro. He is in the fourth grade at Rural Hall Elementary School and is the son of Steve and Jan Blalock of Winston-Salem.
❑ Team Alliance Soccer Club had four teams attend preseason tournaments in February. The '96 TASC Girls Green went 3-0-1, the '95 TASC Boys Green went 4-0 and the '90 TASC Boys Green went 3-0-1, all winning their respective division championships at the Matthews Invitational Soccer Tournament. In addition, the '94 TASC Girls Green outscored their opponents by a combined score of 6-1 to go undefeated in the Kernersville Warm-up.
❑ Michael Madigan, a member of Boy Scout Troop 934 at Mount Tabor Methodist Church, has earned his Eagle Scout Award. For his project, he landscaped a hill at the Carver High School football field. He organized and led a group of Scouts in tilling the ground, planting more than 50 plants, mulching and moving seven tons of rock, which was donated by Vulcan Stone. He added pine needles around the stone, which were spray painted yellow for the Carver High School Yellowjackets. Michael has attended many Boy Scout camps, including a two-week canoe expedition through Boundary Waters in Canada and a 10-day backpacking trip in Philmont, N.M. Michael is a junior at Bishop McGuinness High School and is the son of Mike and Ann Madigan of Winston-Salem.
❑ The 10th annual Festival of Tables, sponsored by the Winston-Salem chapter of The Daughters of Penelope took place Feb. 23 at the Greek Orthodox Church. More than 300 guests attended the festival, which included a special performance by Matt Marshak from New York. Nitsa's Apparel Shop presented a fashion show with its latest fashions and the new Fashionitsa line. More than 40 tables were elegantly decorated for the festival.
❑ The YWCA of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, in conjunction with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and Exchange/SCAN, has received a one-year grant of $150,000 from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction to begin a program at Carver High School. The program is designed to increase high-school graduation rates among high-risk public-school students. The YWCA was one of 60 applicants, out of 300, chosen to receive a portion of a $7 million appropriation by the N.C. General Assembly to schools, agencies and nonprofit organizations to be used for dropout prevention. The grant money will be distributed among collaborating organizations based on services provided. The YWCA will manage tutoring and mentoring components and Exchange/SCAN will handle the teen/parent component. Researchers with the nonprofit School Health Alliance in Forsyth County will gather data to conduct evaluation.
