■ Donna Henderson, a professor of counseling at Wake Forest University, won two national awards from the American Counseling Association. The 2008 ACA Professional Development Award recognizes an ACA member who has "developed techniques and systems that have strengthened, expanded, enhanced or improved the counseling profession and benefitted counseling consumers."
Henderson and three other members of Wake Forest's counseling department were also awarded the ACA's Counselor Educator Advocacy Award. The award recognizes "involvement in legislative advocacy training and development" and was awarded to Henderson, Samuel T. Gladding, a professor and the chairman of counseling; Laura Veach, a professor of counseling; and Debbie Newsome, an associate professor of counseling.
■ Wake Forest University is ranked 19th among national universities in a recent higher-education ranking developed by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, or CCAP. The rankings were published last month in Forbes magazine and appear on the publication's Web site at Forbes.com. The new CCAP ranking evaluates colleges on results by measuring student satisfaction and success after graduation. Factors considered in the new rankings include graduation rates, student satisfaction with courses and professors, and the percentage of students winning Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships.
■ The Wake Forest University Police Department has been awarded full accreditation by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. Accreditation signifies that Wake Forest's campus-police department meets more than 200 standards covering such areas as administration, training and career development, patrol, crime prevention and investigation, evidence collection and management, and traffic operations.
■ The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has appointed Debra Becton Miller, a senior vice president and the director of corporate affairs for Citizens Bank, to the Winston-Salem State University Board of Trustees. Miller, who lives in Londonderry, N.H., is a 1978 alumna of the university. She will fill the unexpired term of Gloria Ross Resse, who recently resigned. The term will end next June 30.
■ Donna Kernodle, an employee at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has achieved Certified Diabetes Educator status by successfully completing the Certification Examination for Diabetes Educators. Kernodle is a registered dietitian.
■ Dr. Allison Brashear, a professor and the chairwoman of neurology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been honored by Park Tudor School as a nationally recognized medical researcher. Brashear is a 1979 graduate of Park Tudor School in Indiana. The Park Tudor Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have made substantial contributions to a field of endeavor, their community and the school. Brashear was the first to show that botulinum toxin relieved spasticity in wrists and fingers of stroke patients. Her findings were published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
■ Sharon Atkins Hill of Archdale has earned the Distinguished Toastmaster award from District 37 Toastmasters. The award is the highest that a Toastmaster can earn. Hill is a member of the Chair City Toastmasters club in Thomasville, the Blue Moon Advanced Toastmasters Club in High Point and the White Sands Toastmasters Club in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
■ Associated Artists of Winston-Salem has elected these officers for 2008-09: Martin Davidson, president; Larry O'Dell, vice president; Allison Norton-Rimron, treasurer; Diane Nations, secretary; and Ramelle Pulitzer past president. The organization elected these board members: Steven Acesta, Jill K. Atherton, G. Douglas Atkinson, Joe Bircher, Lori Cernak, Vicki Davis, Bill Gramley, Diana Greene, Myrna Mackin, Seth Moskowitz, Notis Pagiavlas and Liz Rudisill.
■ Jean and Bob Cooper, the managing owners of Meadowbrook Farm off Fraternity Church Road in Forsyth County, have been named the Southern Regional Tree Farmers of the Year for 2008 in the National Tree Farmer of the Year competition held by the American Tree Farm System. As a result, the Coopers' Meadowbrook Farm qualifies for the national competition.
■ The High Point Chamber of Commerce has presented its 2007 Small Business Awards. The winners are: Small Business Person of the Year for one to 25 employees -- Karen McNeill Harris, the president of McNeill Communications Group Inc.; Small Business Person of the Year for 26 to 250 employees -- Adnan Mjalli, the chairman, president and chief executive of Transtech Pharma; Small Business Advocate of the Year -- Charles A. Alt, a partner with Wyatt Early Harris & Wheeler; and Minority Business Advocate of the Year -- Carlos Olvera, the vice president of human resources for Polo Ralph Lauren.
